In preparation for the May 3 opening of the 2018-2019 AACOMAS application cycle, 181 prospective students and 21 guests traveled from 21 states and DC to the Renaissance Washington, DC Downtown hotel to participate in the second FutureDOdoctor Recruitment Event. This event, held on April 18 during Educating Leaders 2018, the AACOM Annual Conference, was geared toward aspiring physicians interested in learning more about the osteopathic medical profession and strengthening their medical school application.

The first half of the evening’s programming involved dinner and presentations on a range of topics from “What is it like being a DO?” to “How do I apply?” Stephanie Wurth, AACOM’s Director of Application Services, Recruitment & Student Affairs, discussed ways to strengthen an AACOMAS application, and Tyler Cymet, DO, AACOM’s Chief of Clinical Education, gave a lively introduction to the history, philosophy, and practice of osteopathic medicine. Other presentations included insights into improving personal statements and approaching letters of recommendation, as well as two panel discussions–the first by medical school admissions deans and the second by current osteopathic medical students. By the end of the presentations, attendees had heard from various perspectives on the DO profession, application process, and beyond.

After the presentations concluded, attendees made their way across the hall to the recruitment fair. Attendees could interact with representatives and students from COMs at 32 locations from around the country (listed below). AACOM staff also hosted a booth to help answer any questions about the 2018-2019 AACOMAS application and to distribute additional resources provided by the association.

In a recent survey, 96 percent of respondents ranked the event as ‘very good’ or ‘excellent.’ Ninety-one percent of respondents said they were likely to apply to a DO school after attending the event. One pre-med student described their experience, “the event was awesome, well put together and executed flawlessly from my point of view! I learned so much and got to speak some kind and helpful representatives from varying schools!” Another attendee found the event helpful in deciding their future, “before this event, I was not sure if I wanted to pursue an allopathic or osteopathic degree and was planning to apply to both allopathic medical school and osteopathic medical school. I have determined that osteopathic school is definitely the path for me and will be applying to only osteopathic schools. This conference was very helpful in confirming the path for my future.”

AACOM is looking forward to planning more FutureDOdoctor events in the future. To attend a recruitment event at an osteopathic medical school near you, view AACOM’s upcoming recruitment events calendar.
