Sandra Featherman, PhD, former President of the University of New England (1995-2006) and three-term public member of the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA), died early morning on April 26, 2018, after a brief illness resulting from a brain tumor. She served as a mentor to many leaders in osteopathic medical education and will be remembered as a strong supporter of osteopathic medicine and an advocate for higher education, quality, and equity.
In 2005, Dr. Featherman was the recipient of AACOM's Dale Dodson Award in recognition of her leadership and service to osteopathic medical education. In July 2017, she was awarded a Presidential Citation, the American Osteopathic Association (AOA)'s highest honor, which recognizes individuals for their dedication to advancing osteopathic medicine and medical education. She was a past member of the AACOM Board of Governors and its Executive Committee, and in that role was a leader in transitioning the organization to governance by the Board of Deans.
The family has requested no flowers and that any memorial donations be made to organizations supporting higher education.
