Diversity

Our nation’s osteopathic medical schools unanimously recognize that the systemic inequities of America’s education system are adversely impacting the diversity of osteopathic medical school applicants. The statement outlines model strategies to improve and support diversity, equity and inclusion across osteopathic medical education (OME), as well as opportunities to reframe and expand diversity, equity and inclusion efforts.

Graduate Medical Education

As virtual residency interview season begins, AACOM asked four of our Council on Residency Placement (CORP) members for their advice and recommendations on what students can expect from virtual interviews and how best to navigate the process.

As medical students begin to schedule and conduct virtual interviews with residency programs, AACOM spoke with Dr. Susan Enright and Ms. Lisa Cardello, who led the development of AACOM’s Virtual Interview Video Series.

Advocacy

On October 6-7, a record number of 240 advocates from across the OME community raised the profile of key OME federal policy priorities. Participants attended virtual panel discussions, contributed to grassroots advocacy efforts and met virtually with Members of Congress and congressional staff. Across the 32 participating colleges of osteopathic medicine, 113 advocates engaged in 124 congressional meetings.

Mental Health Awareness

Health professionals, who were at a high risk for mental health challenges before the pandemic, now face an even greater risk of depression, burnout, addiction and suicide. To help address these serious concerns, AACOM is asking our community to join us in advocating for the Dr. Lorna Breen Health Care Provider Protection Act.
