National Hispanic Heritage Month

AACOM President & CEO Robert A. Cain, DO, recounts the inspirational work osteopathic medical students across our colleges are doing to promote National Hispanic Heritage Month and create a more inclusive and equitable healthcare system for all.

PCOM second-year medical student Ryan Almodovar champions the goal of bringing healthcare to the whole patient population. As a Cuban and Puerto Rican American born and raised in Miami, Florida, where the majority population is Hispanic, he found that Hispanic culture and health were always at the forefront of the medical community.

UIWSOM second-year medical student Jasmine Castillejos shares how being born as a mixed-race Peruvian and Filipina woman fills her with pride, but how it also comes with cultural conflict.

ARCOM Director of International Medicine and Cultural Education Dr. Monica Rojas and ACHE student Alex Pollock discuss how they are working to advance health equity, including efforts to teach medical Spanish and a focus on the education of our youth to increase Hispanic representation.
