AACOM Partners with the VA to Provide a Webinar Update on GME Expansion

2017-VACAA-GME-Webinar-borderOn November 28, AACOM, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) Office of Academic Affiliations (OAA), hosted an informational webinar exclusive to the osteopathic medical education (OME) community on the VA graduate medical education (GME) expansion under the Veterans Access, Choice, and Accountability Act of 2014. This is the fifth briefing since October 2014 that AACOM has offered with the OAA on this important initiative.

During the webinar, OAA officials provided important information for osteopathic GME programs that are currently affiliated with the VA as well as those who are establishing new partnerships. Participants learned about case studies of interest to osteopathic programs, how to prepare for the upcoming request for proposals, and engaged in a Q&A session with the OAA officials who are leading the national programmatic and operational components of the VACAA GME expansion.

Background:
Authorized in 2014, VACAA directs the VA to affiliate with new medical residency programs or to ensure that existing GME programs have an adequate number of residency positions by adding a total of 1,500 medical residency positions over five years. This provision of the law was extended in 2016, allowing 10 years (through 2024) for the VA to establish these residency positions. VACAA targets residency positions in primary care, mental health, and in certain defined geographic and high-need areas.

AACOM supports the expansion and sustainability of GME positions at the VA created by VACAA and will continue to partner with the OAA to inform and engage the OME community and its GME partners on this important initiative. For additional resources, please visit AACOM’s VA GME web page.
