AACOM Director of Government Relations Presents at WVSOM’s COM Week

West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) held its annual “Celebrate Osteopathic Medicine (COM) Week” March 28-April 2. The American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine’s (AACOM) Director of Government Relations, Pamela Murphy, MSW, addressed WVSOM students and faculty, providing an in-depth overview of the organization’s current legislative initiatives and health policy and educational priorities.

Ms. Murphy highlighted the importance of student involvement in advocacy efforts for the osteopathic medical community and shared ways in which students can be involved, such as applying for AACOM’s Osteopathic Health Policy Intern Program and signing up as subscribers to AACOM Action and Information Alerts.  Ms. Murphy also gave a detailed congressional update, describing the current political landscape in Washington, DC, and the congressional budget and appropriations process. AACOM Senior Government Relations/Policy Specialist Mary-Lynn Bender also attended and spoke to students at the event.

AOA President-elect Martin Levine, DO, served as COM Week’s keynote speaker, and presented on the legacy of osteopathic medicine and students’ responsibility to strengthen its future. Speaker Jason Haxton, Director, Museum of Osteopathic Medicine, A.T. Still University, provided an overview and history of Andrew Taylor Still from childhood to the founding of the osteopathic profession. Karen Steele, DO, FAAO, Associate Dean for Osteopathic Medical Education, WVSOM, wrapped up COM Week with a continuing medical education lecture on the “Seated Facet Release Techniques of the Still Family.”

WVSOM holds COM Week each year to raise awareness about osteopathic medicine and to bring recognition to WVSOM and its mission to improve the quality of health care in rural West Virginia and the nation.
