The Council of Student Financial Aid Administrators (CSFAA), led by Chairperson Kimberly Brown, PhD, Director of Finance, Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, convened an in-person meeting on January 13 at the Association of American Medical Colleges 2011 Professional Development Conference for Health Professions Financial Aid Administrators in San Diego, California. The CSFAA approved minutes from its October meeting and held a planning session for an upcoming series of AACOM-sponsored financial resource webinars that will be offered in the spring. Paul S. Garrard, Founder and President, PGPresents, LLC, who will be the featured presenter in the webinar series, joined the planning session via conference call.
Other discussion topics included a Department of Education proposed rule, the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on Program Integrity: Gainful Employment, on which AACOM submitted comments in November, and utilization of the new CSFAA Collaborative Site for Council members on the AACOM web site.
The next CSFAA meeting will be held via conference call on Monday, April 18.
More than 60 student representatives from 24 colleges of osteopathic medicine attended the January 27-30 Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents (COSGP) Winter Business Meeting at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey School of Osteopathic Medicine (UMDNJ-SOM). COSGP First Vice Chair Beth Varadian arranged “The Student Leadership Series,” which covered how to run an effective meeting; create curricula vitae that fit well with the Electronic Residency Application Service; and work on board transitions. Attendees participated in workshops on how to learn from their successes, and discussed advocating for tobacco-free campuses, endorsing the Glossary of Osteopathic Terminology as the standard language for the profession, and other issues. COSGP members also had the opportunity to hear from Thomas Cavalieri, DO, Dean, UMDNJ-SOM; Thomas Scandalis, DO, Dean, New York College of Osteopathic Medicine of New York Institute of Technology (NYCOM/NYIT); and Norman Gevitz, PhD, Professor and Director for the Future of the Health Professions, NYCOM/NYIT.
