Approximately 300 osteopathic physicians, educators and students recently attended the 22nd Annual Osteopathic Medical Education Leadership Conference (OME XXII), held January 12-14 in Fort Lauderdale, FL. The AOA and AACOM jointly sponsored event opened with greetings from AOA President Martin S. Levine, DO, and AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH. The theme of this year’s conference was “Succeeding Through Growth,” with discussions and presentations on patient-centered care and expansion of the osteopathic physician field. Keynote speaker Fitzhugh Mullan, MD, Murdock Professor of Medicine & Health Policy at George Washington University School of Public Health, echoed this theme with his address, “The Growth of the Physician Workforce 2012 & Beyond.” The meeting program was developed under the leadership of Co-Chairs Joseph S. DeGaetano, DO, Associate Dean for Clinical Curriculum/GME, Nova Southeastern University - College of Osteopathic Medicine, and Carmen A. Ciervo, DO, Senior Vice President for Clinical Integration, Kennedy Health System.
Next year’s OME XXIII is scheduled to take place January 4-6, 2013, at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess in Scottsdale, AZ. J. Michael Finley, DO, Academic Officer, Western University of Health Sciences/College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific, and Peter B. Dane, DO, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, will serve as Co-Chairs of the 2013 conference.
