VA National Academic Affiliations Council Holds First Meeting

On February 8, 2012, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) National Academic Affiliations Council (NAAC) began its two-day inaugural meeting in Washington, DC. AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, who was appointed by Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki, represents the nation’s osteopathic medical schools and is the only osteopathic physician on the council. During their inaugural meeting, NAAC members heard briefings from the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Office of Academic Affiliations on the status of the 2009 Blue Ribbon Panel on VA Medical School Affiliations, and learned about the VHA educational portfolio’s current and future directions. John Gingrich, Chief of Staff, Department of VA, also addressed the group and presented the NAAC members with their certificates of appointment. Members were then engaged in an open discussion to assess the future of the VHA’s educational programs, and to begin formulating recommendations.

NAAC was established in October 2011 to advise the Secretary of Veterans Affairs on issues affecting partnerships between the Department of Veterans Affairs and the nation’s health professions schools and universities. The 14-member council is chaired by Jordan J. Cohen, MD, Professor of Medicine at George Washington University and former President and CEO of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).
