Educational Council on Osteopathic Principles (ECOP)
The Educational Council on Osteopathic Principles (ECOP) met on September 27-29, 2012, at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-HCOM) in Athens, Ohio. The meeting convened under the leadership of Chair Kevin D. Treffer, DO, Associate Professor and OMM Coordinator at Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences College of Osteopathic Medicine (KCUMB-COM). During the meeting, council members:
- Held discussions on standardized practical examination grading, best practices for practical examination formats, and potential changes to AACOM’s Glossary of Osteopathic Terminology and Osteopathic Medical College Information Book (CIB).
- Toured the OU-HCOM Ohio Musculoskeletal and Neurological Institute.
- Heard an update from ECOP Staff Liaison Tyler Cymet, DO, Associate Vice President for Medical Education at the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM).
- Reviewed future committee meeting sites and dates.
ECOP will reconvene April 11-13, 2013, at the University of Pikeville-Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine (UP-KYCOM).
National Academy of Osteopathic Medical Educators (NAOME)
The National Academy of Osteopathic Medical Educators (NAOME) met on September 30 in Chevy Chase, Maryland, under the leadership of NAOME Chair Patricia S. Sexton, DHEd, Associate Dean of Curriculum at A.T. Still University-Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (ATSU-KCOM). The group discussed priorities and formulated a list of projects, including the formation of NAOME bylaws, creating a re-application form, and creating a web page for the creation of an osteopathic medical educator’s oath. The group left with the additional task of formulating the priority areas for the upcoming round of .
Society of Osteopathic Medical Educators (SOME) Steering Committee
The Society of Osteopathic Medical Educators (SOME) Steering Committee convened on October 1, 2012, at AACOM’s offices in Chevy Chase, Maryland. SOME met under the leadership of Chair Elaine Soper, PhD, Associate Dean, Assessment and Educational Development at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM). During the meeting, Martha Echols, PhD, MEd, Assistant Dean of Medical Education at Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine (NSU-COM) and current SOME Steering Committee Secretary, was named Steering Committee Chair-Elect to fill the vacancy created by former Chair-Elect Luke Mortensen, PhD, who left the position as part of his move to AACOM. The committee also announced that it is currently accepting nominations for new members, and discussed topics for a session to be held at the Joint AACOM and AODME 2013 Annual Meeting.
Council of Student Financial Aid Administrators (CSFAA)
The Council of Student Financial Aid Administrators (CSFAA), led by Chair Kimberly Brown, PhD, Director of Finance, Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine of Midwestern University (CCOM), convened via conference call on October 1, 2012. Members approved minutes from the CSFAA’s July meeting and welcomed speaker Paul S. Garrard, MBA, Founder and President, PGPresents, LLC. Dr. Brown and Mr. Garrard spoke with Council members about the 2012 AACOM-sponsored CSFAA Financial Aid Module for Graduating Seniors: “Helping Future DOs Choose Repayment Strategies.” The module was presented by Mr. Garrard to the CSFAA in May to be utilized in conjunction with, or as a follow-up to, existing exit counseling offered by financial aid offices at each college of osteopathic medicine. CSFAA members discussed the need for additional modules in the near future and provided feedback on the 2012 module.
Dr. Brown announced that the Council will hold an extended in-person meeting this year during the Association of American Medical Colleges’ (AAMC) Professional Development Conference (PDC) for Health Professions Financial Aid Administrators. CSFAA members were encouraged to submit discussion topics to their leadership. Pamela Murphy, MSW, Director of Government Relations at AACOM, discussed a recent letter sent to the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) from AACOM, AAMC, and other health professions education organizations regarding a repeat coursework issue. Ms. Murphy also presented a legislative update to the Council. Mary-Lynn Bender, Assistant Director of Government Relations at AACOM, briefly discussed features available for members to utilize on the CSFAA’s members-only section of AACOM’s website and also encouraged Council members to complete a survey on AACOM’s Inside OME newsletter.
CSFAA’s next meeting will be held in conjunction with the AAMC’s PDC in January, which will take place in Phoenix, Arizona.

Board of Deans (BOD)
The Board of Deans (BOD) meeting convened on October 9 during the American Osteopathic Association’s (AOA) Osteopathic Medical Conference & Exposition (OMED) 2012 in San Diego, California, to discuss issues related to osteopathic medical education (OME) and graduate medical education (GME).
Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents (COSGP)
The Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents (COSGP) met October 6-8, under the leadership of Chair Sally Matthew, student government president at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine/ New York Institute of Technology (NYCOM/NYIT).
During its meetings, the Council:
- Observed a presentation from AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon on AACOM initiatives related to IT and social media, GME as it relates to the Institute of Medicine, the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC), and the Blue Ribbon Commission (BRC).
- Conducted a “Meet ‘n’ Greet” event to allow members to familiarize themselves with one another.
- Held a team-building exercise.
- Observed “Local and International Community Health Challenges/Care,” a presentation by Alan Schalscha, DO, Mission Director of DOCARE Medical Mission in Guatemala.
- Observed a presentation by AOA Editor in Chief Gilbert E. D'Alonzo, Jr., DO.
- Received an update on the American Osteopathic Foundation (AOF) from Kai Schlingmann, AOF Student Representative and student at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM).
- Received a legislative update from AACOM Government Relations Director Pamela Murphy, MSW, and AACOM Assistant Director of Government Relations Mary-Lynn Bender.
Immediately following each COSGP meeting, the COSGP Executive Board conducts an electronic survey to solicit Council member feedback on the Board’s choices for speakers, activities, etc., for self-reflection, and for improvement of the next meeting.
The next COSGP meeting will be held January 18-20, 2013. The location for this meeting has not yet been announced.
Council of Development and Alumni Relations Professionals (Dev-Alum)
The Council of Development and Alumni Relations Professionals (Dev-Alum) convened on October 8, under the leadership of Chair Felicia Bruno, MA, Assistant Dean of Student Administrative Services, Alumni Affairs, and Continuing Education at NYCOM/NYIT. The meeting opened with introductions and short presentations to update the council on recent and current projects from members’ respective colleges. Lisa Etienne, Assistant Director of Communications and Marketing at AACOM and new Staff Liaison to MAC and Dev-Alum, presented a brief introduction to the planned AACOM online communities using Higher Logic, a social media and marketing platform, and Esther Hevia, Director of Alumni Affairs and Continuing Education at NYCOM/NYIT, discussed the college's success with Constant Contact, a different social media and marketing platform. Ms. Bruno also provided a recap of the AACOM Council Leadership Strategic Planning meeting that occurred in July.
Council of Osteopathic Medical Student Services Officers (COMSSO)
The Council of Osteopathic Medical Student Services Officers (COMSSO) convened on October 8, under the leadership of Chair Kathryn C. Lambert, DO, FAOASM, Acting Assistant Dean for Student Affairs at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-School of Osteopathic Medicine (UMDNJ-SOM). The meeting began with a presentation by Thomas Moorman, EdD, Vice President for Student Affairs at the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth/Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNTHSC/TCOM), on assessing and supporting student mental health. Other meeting presentations addressed career counseling for osteopathic medical students, social media, life skills, and student organization advising.
Marketing and Communications Advisory Council (MAC)
The Marketing and Communications Advisory Council (MAC) met on October 8, led by Chair Karoline E. Lane, MLS, Director of Communication at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-HCOM). Ms. Lane opened the meeting with introductions and a review of the major issues addressed at the July AACOM Council Leadership Meeting. Participants discussed possible session topics for the Joint AACOM & AODME 2013 Annual Meeting. Lisa Etienne, Assistant Director of Communications and Marketing at AACOM and new AACOM Staff Liaison to MAC and Dev-Alum, delivered a presentation on the planned AACOM online communities.
Council of Fiscal Officers (CFO)
The Council of Fiscal Officers (CFO) convened on October 9, under the leadership of Chair Gregory Gaus, CPA, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine of Midwestern University (CCOM). The meeting opened with introductions of Council members and meeting guests. Members then discussed the implications of increasing numbers of offshore rotations, and the schools were asked to detail their reactions to this trend. AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, provided an update on AACOM operations and current association policy initiatives. The meeting adjourned after an open discussion regarding covered topics and a draft agenda for the next meeting.
Assembly of Presidents (AOP)
The Assembly of Presidents (AOP) met on October 10 under the leadership of Chair William Strampel, DO, Dean at the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM). The Assembly heard various reports on AACOM activities and each of the attending members reported on their activities at their respective schools.
Council of Osteopathic Medical Admissions Officers (COMAO)
The Council of Osteopathic Medical Admissions Officers (COMAO) convened on October 10, under the leadership of Chair Paula Watkins, MAS, Director of Admissions & Enrollment Services at UMDNJ-SOM.
At the meeting, the Council:
- Discussed the possibility of virtual admissions fairs.
- Received feedback on the possibility of changing prerequisite listings and adding specialties at several schools.
- Heard an update on current recruitment activities.
- Held a discussion regarding the new MCAT.
