President and CEO Attends IOM Global Forum Workshop
AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, participated in the May 14-15 “Establishing Transdisciplinary Professionalism for Health” public workshop, held in Washington, DC and hosted by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Global Forum on Innovation in Health Professional Education. The two-day workshop included sessions and discussions on interprofessional and transdisciplinary professionalism today and in the future. Workshop objectives included exploring the definition of “professionalism,” its impact on transdisciplinary collaboration and the development of transdisciplinary professionalism core competencies, and opportunities for teaching this cross-disciplinary code of ethics.
President and CEO Attends International Workforce Collaborative
AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, attended the International Health Workforce Collaborative, held May 6-9 in Quebec City, Canada. The annual conference is designed to promote the international exchange of medical workforce policy approaches. During the conference, Dr. Shannon attended plenary sessions on global trends affecting medical workforce policies and driving workforce innovation. Other conference attendees included policy makers, educators, researchers and practitioners from the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom who play a role in medical workforce issues.
AACOM Representatives Attend WAAHP 2013 Conference
AACOM Vice President for Research and Application Services Tom Levitan, MEd, and AACOM Associate Director of Application Services Gina M. Moses, MEd, participated in the Western Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (WAAHP) 2013 Conference, held May 3-7 in Irvine, California. At the event, Mr. Levitan and Ms. Moses engaged with leadership and faculty from a variety of health professions schools, as well as pre-health advisors from colleges across the nation.
President and CEO Attends COCA Meeting
AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, attended the American Osteopathic Association (AOA)Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) meeting held May 3-4 in Chicago, Illinois. At the meeting, Dr. Shannon provided comments and was called on to speak before the meeting attendees. The next COCA meeting will be held December 7-8.
AACOM Representatives Attend AAMC Annual Physician Workforce Research Conference
AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH; AACOM Vice President for Research and Application Services Tom Levitan, MEd; and AACOM Vice President and Chair for Medical Education Luke H. Mortensen, PhD, attended the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) 2013 Annual Physician Workforce Research Conference, held May 2-3 in Alexandria, Virginia. The conference offered plenary sessions and panel discussions on critical workforce issues, including as physician reimbursement reform, the future of graduate medical education, the role of debt and potential income on career choice, and the primary care workforce shortage.
Associate Director of Application Services Holds Recruitment Efforts at DC and MD Colleges
AACOM Associate Director of Application Services Gina M. Moses, MEd, continued AACOM’s osteopathic medical school recruitment efforts at several recent health professions recruitment fairs, one at George Washington University in Washington, DC on April 22; another at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, on April 23; and a third at the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland, on April 24. During the events, Ms. Moses answered questions about osteopathic medicine and provided additional information and resources to attendees interested in applying to osteopathic medical school. AACOM Osteopathic Health Policy Intern, Roberto Fernandez, MPH, assisted Ms. Moses at the AACOM information booth during the Johns Hopkins University event.

The Primary Care Organizations Consortium (PCOC) met on April 19 at the Association of American Medical Colleges headquarters in Washington, DC. AACOM Director of Government Relations Pamela Murphy, MSW; AACOM Fellow in Health Care and Medical Education Leadership and Policy Clinton E. Adams, DO, MPA; and AACOM Osteopathic Health Policy Intern, Roberto Fernandez, MPH, represented AACOM at the meeting. The next PCOC meeting will be held in fall 2013; a date for the meeting has not yet been announced.

Director of Government Relations Participates in AACN Policy Roundtable
On March 19, AACOM Director of Government Relations Pamela Murphy, MSW, served as a panelist for the Faculty Policy Intensive Interprofessional Roundtable Discussion hosted by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN). Other government relations representatives from national health professions education organizations also served as panelists, including representatives from AAMC, the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) and the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP). In addition to providing insights into federal policy issues relative to the health care system’s move toward increased interprofessional collaboration, panelists discussed each organization’s top policy agenda items for the year, as well as upcoming interprofessional education (IPE) initiatives. AACOM collaborates with six other health professions organizations through the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC)
Director of Government Relations Delivers Legislative Update to PCOM Students
On March 11, AACOM Director of Government Relations Pamela Murphy, MSW, delivered a presentation on AACOM’s current congressional and federal advocacy efforts to Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) students. The presentation included a review of the United States’ present political landscape, an overview of AACOM’s current policy objectives and methods being implemented to work toward those objectives. The presentation also highlighted tips and resources students can access for more information.
