AACOM Representatives Attend Academy of Health Policy Forum
AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH; AACOM Director of Government Relations Pamela Murphy, MSW; Judith Mun, AACOM Policy and Public Affairs Specialist; and AACOM Fellow in Health Care and Medical Education Leadership and Policy Clinton E. Adams, DO, MPA, FACHE, attended the recent Academy of Health Policy Forum, which took place February 4-5, 2013, in Washington, DC. United States Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius delivered the opening plenary address on federal health policy priorities. The forum also offered sessions and discussions on a variety of issues including health information technology, health care payment models, Medicaid, diabetes prevention and economic health.
AACOM Leadership Attend Final BRC Meeting
AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH; Vice President for Research and Application Services Tom Levitan, MEd; Associate Vice President for Medical Education Tyler Cymet, DO; and Executive Assistant to the President Anna Naranjo, MA, attended the final meeting of the Blue Ribbon Commission on for the Advancement of Osteopathic Medical Education (BRC). The meeting was held January 29-31, 2013, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Members of AACOM’s Board of Deans (BOD) also attended the meeting, including BOD Chair Marc B. Hahn, DO, Executive Vice President, Academic and Medical Affairs; Provost and Dean at the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences College of Osteopathic Medicine (KCUMB-COM), BRC Co-Chair; BOD Vice Chair Kenneth J. Veit, DO, MBA, Provost/Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM); Boyd R. Buser, DO, Vice President for Health Affairs and Dean of the University of Pikeville-Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine (UP-KYCOM), BRC Co-Chair; Kenneth H. AACOM President Attends Coalition for Physician Accountability Meeting
AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, attended the recent Coalition for Physician Accountability meeting held January 7-8, 2013, in at the Rosewood Crescent Hotel in Dallas, Texas. The meeting was hosted by the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB). Attendees discussed topics such as maintaining physician competence, the potential impact of the Affordable Care Act. The Coalition for Physician Accountability was formed to strengthen the professional self-regulation system through continuous improvement of medical education, assessment and practice. Dr. Shannon attended as a guest of the American Osteopathic Association.
AACOM Associate Vice-President Delivers Presentations at COMs
Associate Vice President for Medical Education Tyler Cymet, DO, has traveled to several COMs in the past two months delivering presentations and holding discussions on the proposed unified accreditation system for graduate medical education. Interested osteopathic medical students at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) on January 10, the Nova Southeastern University-College of Osteopathic Medicine (NSU-COM) on January 31, and the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) on February 1, attended Dr. Cymet’s presentations.
