AACOM Associate VP to Receive MedChi Award
AACOM Associate Vice President of Medical Education Tyler Cymet, DO, has been selected to receive the Maryland State Medical Society’s (MedChi) Dr. Henry P. and M. Page Laughlin 2013 Distinguished Editorial Award for his service on the Maryland Medicine Editorial Board and his work with Maryland Medicine, The Maryland Medical Journal as a guest editor of:
Dr. Cymet will be presented with this award at the MedChi House of Delegates meeting on September 20.
AACOM Associate Director Leads Osteopathic Medicine Workshop at UCLA
On July 23, Gina Moses, MEd, AACOM Associate Director of Application Services, presented an osteopathic medicine workshop to an audience of over 100 pre-medical students at the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP) at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) campus. Over 150 aspiring pre-medical students and allied health students attended this conference.
Ms. Moses was joined at the event by four current osteopathic medical students from the Western University of Health Sciences/College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific (Western U/COMP): Ms. Emmeline Wong, Mr. Matthew Gill, Mr. Peter Nguyen, and Mr. Richard Thai. These students provided insight on their osteopathic medical school training and performed several demonstrations of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) to highlight the benefits this training offers to their patients.
AACOM Representatives Attend AOA 2013 Annual Business Meeting
AACOM staff, including President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH; COO John E. Roane, Jr.; Vice President and Chair for Medical Education Luke H. Mortensen, PhD; Associate Vice President for Medical Education Tyler Cymet, DO; Director of Government Relations Pamela Murphy, MSW; and Assistant Director of Government Relations Mary-Lynn Bender attended the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Annual Meeting July 17-22 in Chicago, IL.
While at the meeting, Dr. Shannon, Mr. Roane, and Dr. Cymet attended the AOA House of Delegates meeting. Dr. Shannon also attended the first in-person meeting of AACOM’s newly installed Board of Deans (BOD) Executive Committee, as well as a full board meeting. During the AOA Board of Trustees meeting, Dr. Shannon delivered a report updating the board on AACOM’s current activities.
AACOM Staff Attend the Robert Graham Center Primary Care Forum on Capitol Hill
On July 16, AACOM Vice for Research and Application Services Tom Levitan, MEd; AACOM Associate Director of Research Erik Guercio, MA; AACOM Research Analyst Eric Lui; and former AACOM Osteopathic Health Policy Intern Keith Egan, OMS IV, attended the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNECOM), participated in the Primary Care Forum on Capitol Hill hosted by the Robert Graham Center. This year’s forum, entitled Graduate Medical Education Outcomes, focused on a research report, “Toward Graduate Medical Education (GME) Accountability: Measuring the Outcomes of GME Institutions,” which will be published in the September 2013 edition of Academic Medicine. Four of the study’s authors spoke at the event, including Fitzhugh Mullan, MD, faculty member at the George Washington University School of Medicine and School of Public Health. Dr. Mullan noted a number of the study’s key findings, including positive relationships between a program’s graduates entering primary care and variables such as the number of female graduates, DO graduates, and the impact on rural areas of the sponsoring program.
AACOM President Attends RowanSOM Opening Ceremony
On July 1, AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, attended the celebration of the official transformation of the former University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey- School of Osteopathic Medicine (UMDNJ-SOM) to the new Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine (RowanSOM). The event took place on the RowanSOM campus in Stratford, NJ with more than 600 student, faculty, staff, public official, and other visitors in attendance.
AACOM Staff Attend CHF Annual Congressional Briefing
On June 20, AACOM Policy and Public Affairs Specialist Judith Mun, MPA, and AACOM Editor and Communications Associate Lindsey Jurd attended the Coalition for Health Funding’s (CHF) annual spring congressional briefing, entitled “Public Health 101: Health is All Around You,” in Washington, DC, for which AACOM served as a sponsor. Established in 1970, the CHF is the oldest and largest non-profit alliance working to preserve and strengthen public health investments for all Americans. AACOM is a member of the coalition, which, together with its other affiliate organizations, represents more than 100 million patients, health care providers, public health professionals, and scientists.
The briefing featured presentations from a panel of four speakers representing and discussing their perspectives on the various intersections of public health with areas such as the military, education, public safety, and business. The purpose of the event was to garner support for and engender awareness of the importance of strengthening U.S. public health system. The speakers maintained that more innovative and cost-effective strategies toward improving public health would benefit the U.S. as a whole. Speakers at the event included Naomi Adler, Esq., President and CEO, United Way of Westchester and Putnam; David Johnson, Senior Vice President, Employee Benefits Division, RCM&D; Jim Parsons, Director, VERA Institute for Justice Substance Abuse and Mental Health Program; and Dr. Ryung Suh, CEO, Atlas Research and faculty member, Georgetown University and Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. AACOM Government Relations Staff Attend White House Briefing on ACA Implementation
On June 18, AACOM Government Relations staff attended a White House briefing on the enrollment process for uninsured Americans under the Affordable Care Act. Speakers included, Valerie Jarrett, Senior Advisor to President Obama, who discussed the importance of collaboration to reach their target audience of uninsured United States citizens. Although the 6-month period for enrollment begins October 1, 2013 and extends through March 1, 2014, the Administration is working alongside federal agencies such as the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), to launch an educational outreach campaign to reach the uninsured. Furthermore, Healthcare.gov has been re-launched to include additional enrollment information, and a new HHS toll-free call center has been established as part of the educational campaign.
