February 2015 marks several historic moments for graduate medical education and signifies great strides in the transition to a single GME accreditation. For the first time, AOA and AACOM nominees to the ACGME board were seated for the ACGME board meeting February 6-9, 2015.  

Additional developments in February include:  

ACGME Announced the New, Senior Vice President for Osteopathic Accreditation

On February 23, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) announced the hiring of its first Senior Vice President for Osteopathic Accreditation (SVP-OA). Lorenzo L. Pence, DO, FACOFP, former member of the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) Board of Deans, was selected to develop and lead this new department within ACGME. As part of this department, ACGME also placed Tiffany Moss, MBA, as Executive Director of the OPC and ONMM Committees.  See AACOM’s announcement on the SVP-OA here.

ACGME Board-Approved OPC and ONMM Program Requirements

The ACGME’s Osteopathic Principles Committee and the Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine Committee requirements were unanimously approved by the ACGME Board of Directors during their February Board meeting: see AACOM’s announcement here. DO Representatives Now on ACGME Residency Review Committees

The ACGME Board of Directors voted to approve AOA’s nominations to relevant Review Committees (RCs) during their February Board meeting. These DOs will be seated on the respective review committees on July 1, 2015. See the list of DOs on ACGME’s Review Committee’s here.

ACGME Annual Education Conference

ACGME’s Annual Education Conference in San Diego, CA takes place on February 26-March 1, 2015. ACGME will hold a preconference entitled “ACGME Accreditation Pre-Conference for Osteopathic Programs and Institutions” on Thursday, February 26. There will be two “sunset sessions” held during the pre-conference featuring Robert Cain, DO and Lisa DeStefano, DO, who will give updates on the osteopathic recognition and osteopathic neuromusculoskeletal medicine requirements respectively. There will be three key events specifically on the single GME accreditation system at the Joint AACOM & AODME 2015 Annual Conference:

  • A pre-conference OPTI workshop focused on institutional accreditation will be held on April 21, 2015.
  • A plenary session featuring Thomas J. Nasca, MD, CEO, ACGME will be held on Wednesday, April 22, 2015.
  • A four-hour deep dive on the single GME accreditation system will be held during the main meeting, on Thursday, April 23.
