his month, AACOM welcomed two new colleges to its membership, the Arkansas College of Osteopathic Medicine and the University of Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine. With these additions, there are now 33 U.S. colleges of osteopathic medicine (COMs) in 31 states. Currently, more than 20 percent of medical students in the United States are earning their degrees at one of the nation’s COMs.
Arkansas College of Osteopathic Medicine
On May 3, 2016, the Arkansas College of Osteopathic Medicine (ARCOM) was granted membership to AACOM after receiving accreditation by the American Osteopathic Association’s Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA).
This decision has allowed ARCOM to join the 2016-17 AACOMAS application cycle and is currently accepting student applications for its inaugural class. This is a critical step in the development of the new osteopathic medical college, which is located in Fort Smith, AR.
“ARCOM has been in active development since 2014 and has worked tirelessly for this day,” said Kenneth A. Heiles, DO, Vice President and Chief Academic Officer of the Arkansas Colleges of Health Education, and Founding Dean of ARCOM. “We are very excited to begin the process of recruiting for a class of 150 students to start in August 2017. We will begin rapidly expanding the number of faculty and staff hired to meet the needs of the school.”
University of Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine
On May 6, 2016, the University of Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM) became a member of AACOM after receiving accreditation from COCA.
“This is a crucial step in UIW’s goal of addressing the health care needs of San Antonio and South Texas,” said Founding Dean and Chief Academic Officer Robyn Phillips-Madson, DO, MPH. “We still have much work ahead but we are pleased that we have received the green light to move forward.”
Located in San Antonio, TX, UIWSOM plans for an inaugural class of 150 students to begin classes in Fall 2017. The new school joins the 2016-2017 AACOMAS application cycle as the UIWSOM Office of Admissions will begin accepting student applications June 1, 2016.
