Reflecting on Resilience

Fostering resilience across the medical education continuum is essential to the future of our nation’s health care system. Relevant to this charge, the 2016 Annual Conference program featured presentations from notable leaders in medical education who offered their unique perspectives and approaches to promoting resilience in medical training and practice.

The annual conference theme emerges at a time in the profession while we, as medical educators, learners, and health care providers, recognize the longstanding need to better understand and develop resilience throughout the continuum of medical education, and through a greater national conversation.

AACOM Vice President for Medical Education Luke H. Mortensen, PhD, described this year’s conference as “an essential program of presentations dedicated to creating ‘disruptive learning’ experiences that engage and provoke us to more openly discuss adapting to stressors that affect our roles as learners and practitioners.”

Also recognizing the importance of resilience in OME, members of the Mental Health Awareness Task Force (MHATF)—a project of AACOM’s Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents (COSGP)—presented the results of its recently distributed mental health survey of the nation’s more than 26,000 DO students.

Plenary Performance

Our plenary speakers—Aviad Haramati, PhD and Pamela Wible, MD—addressed the conference themes of resilience and stress management, while Mara Liasson provided attendees with an overview of the national political climate and elections. ED to MED Town Hall

Noteworthy to this year's conference, AACOM launched its first national grassroots advocacy campaign, ED to MED, during a special town hall forum. The campaign launch coincides with an upcoming milestone for graduate student issues, the reauthorization of the Higher Education Act (HEA), the law governing federal financial aid and loan repayment options. Read more about the details of this highly attended event.

Awards Banquet

Each year AACOM hosts its Annual Awards Banquet to recognize the exceptional accomplishments of individuals within the osteopathic medical community. To close the conference, AACOM honored recipients of our 2016 National Awards during this year's ceremony.
