AACOM is proud to announce the recipients of the 2016 Sherry R. Arnstein Minority Student Scholarship.

Awardees for this program were selected based on a rigorous evaluation of their credentials, applications, and personal essays on ways to increase student diversity in osteopathic medical school. Of the more than 80 applications submitted to the program this year, five outstanding DO students have been selected to receive scholarships—a mark of AACOM’s commitment to fostering excellence by promoting diversity in osteopathic medical education (OME).

AACOM congratulates the following students:

Kathryn Teixeira

"I have heard many times that patients feel disconnected from their physician because their doctor speaks over them, looks only at their computer, or skips the physical exam in favor of medication. I did not witness these issues when shadowing this DO. His focus was on the patient not the symptoms, he was motivated to increase access to healthcare for all his patients, and he was committed to rural communities. These three qualities are also core elements of the mission of osteopathic medicine by which I am inspired to change the future of health care."
Katie Teixeira is a second-year osteopathic medical student at Rocky Vista University (RVU) in Parker, CO. She is Vice President of the RVU American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians Student Chapter. Katie is also a member of the Rural and Wilderness Medicine Honors Track. Her interests include rural family medicine, women's health, and serving a Spanish-speaking population in the United States and around the world.
