AACOM is proud to join partners in celebrating the 70th anniversary of Academic Affiliations between the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and professional schools—including 27 colleges of osteopathic medicine (COMs) in the United States.
This remarkable collaboration between COMs and the VA’s Office of Academic Affiliations (OAA) plays an essential role in delivering health services to veterans, training the clinicians who then care for patients, and driving innovation across the U.S. health system and throughout the osteopathic medical education (OME) community.
AACOM President and CEO Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, calls the Academic Affiliations partnership a “win-win all the way around” for future DOs, the patients and families they serve, and the faculty who all interact in a variety of clinical settings.
“I think it’s a very good introduction for our students and our residents to the possibilities of being involved with the Veterans Administration in their health services in the long term,” Dr. Shannon said. “And I believe the opportunities the VA has provided in terms of the innovations they’ve done with electronic medical records and so many things is an important aspect of bringing that kind of knowledge opportunity to our students and our system,” so future DOs can more effectively serve a diversity of patients, including those in underserved communities."
Academic Affiliations offer medical students and residents hands-on learning experiences through clinical rotations and residencies and overlaps with the mission of osteopathic medical schools to provide service to the general population. AACOM actively seeks to strengthen Academic Affiliations with the VA and the osteopathic medical education (OME) community. As such, AACOM is currently seeking members to form a task force on OME and VA Academic Affiliations. View solicitation for more information.
