AACOM welcomed medical education leaders in diversity from across the nation for the second annual Diversity Committee Meeting on December 11-12. The two-day conference covered a range of topics impacting diversity in the osteopathic medical education (OME) continuum. AACOM's 10 member diversity committee planned and attended the meeting.
Monday’s sessions included perspectives from the medical education community, workshops on creating opportunities to grow diversity, and how AACOM can help our colleges of osteopathic medicine (COMs) promote diversity. Speakers included Adrienne White-Faines, MPA, CEO of the AOA, who presented on outcomes from the National Academy of Medicine; David Acosta, MD, AAMC Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer; and Zuri Hudson, COSGP National Diversity Representative, who presented on strategic planning and crafting a mission to create a diverse campus. AACOM presentations included an overview of financial support from AACOM for applicants by Stephanie Wurth, Director of Application Services, Recruitment & Student Affairs, and an interactive discussion on how AACOM can work with COMs, medical educators, students, and others in OME to strengthen and promote diversity by Paul DeMiglio, Senior Media Specialist.
Tuesday’s sessions focused on influencing meaningful change with regard to diversity within OME, including a discussion of the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) standard by Stephen C. Shannon, DO, President and CEO of AACOM, and Brian Kim, JD, Vice President of Accreditation and Secretary of COCA. Jamboor Vishwanatha, PhD, Professor at the University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC), presented an overview of the National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN), a diversity program for professional societies. The meeting concluded by identifying actionable goals for fundraising, engagement, and next steps.
