AACOM to Launch Senior Leadership Development Program

Senior Leadership Development Program logoAACOM strongly believes that colleges of osteopathic medicine (COMs) are positioned to play a crucial role in an emerging national physician shortage.

A key element in AACOM’s strategic plan is ”to support member schools in preparing osteopathic physicians who are ready to meet the evolving health care needs of America by promoting excellence, innovation and a culture of lifelong learning throughout medical education.”

In line with that commitment, AACOM is working with the Academy for Academic Leadership (AAL)* to devise a program specifically designed for individuals in COM senior leadership positions. AACOM’s Senior Leadership Development Program (SLDP) will assist new and experienced deans, and others identified by their schools as potential future deans, in developing and enhancing critical leadership and management competencies.

Program graduates will be well positioned to meet today’s challenges in osteopathic medical education (OME) and identify tomorrow’s opportunities.

The SLDP will take place over a one-year period, which is expected to begin at the Joint AACOM & AODME 2017 Annual Conference in Baltimore, MD. It will involve four and one-half days of on-site participation, as well as a number of conference calls spread over the course of the program in five phases.

Participation in the program will be based on a competitive application process. Preference will be given to deans in their first deanship and to those who have served three years or less as a dean. SLDP positions are also available for other senior leaders with a career goal of becoming a dean. They must be nominated by the current dean at their home institution.

AACOM will be sending a call for applications and nominations in several weeks. More information about the program and how to apply will be available on AACOM’s website and across our social media platforms at that time.
