AACOM Makes Strategic Move to Strengthen Medical Education
On January 1, AACOM—which previously solely represented accredited U.S. colleges of osteopathic medicine—launched the Assembly of Osteopathic Graduate Medical Educators (AOGME). AOGME is a professional membership group that encompasses the membership of the former Association of Osteopathic Directors and Medical Educators (AODME), a 501(c)(6) organization that represented leaders in osteopathic GME. By integrating AOGME within its membership base, AACOM has brought together the clinical faculty and leaders responsible for the clinical learning environment for osteopathic UME and GME, expanding its scope in the medical education community and better positioning itself to strengthen and enhance the entire continuum of osteopathic medical education. Progress in the Transition to the Single GME Accreditation System
By December 31, 2017, AOA programs that are three years or longer in length were required to apply to the ACGME in order to recruit residents in the 2018 AOA Match. This is due to the Section X of the AOA Basic Standards for Postdoctoral Training, which set deadlines for program applications to the ACGME to ensure a smooth transition. According to the AOA, 68 percent of 1,244 AOA programs are in ACGME accredited or in pre-accreditation status as of January 2, 2018*. This data point encompasses 82 percent of residency programs, 39 percent of fellowships and 26 percent of internship programs.
The Section X deadlines for one and two-year programs (mostly internship and fellowship programs) is December 31, 2018.
