On September 17, 2018, Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) announced that it has received approval from the American Osteopathic Association (AOA)’s Council on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) to increase their class size and offer courses at Elmira College in Elmira, NY. The Elmira campus will be LECOM’s newest teaching location, joining other LECOM campuses in Erie, PA, Greensburg, PA, and Brandenton, FL. Osteopathic medical students will begin classes at Elmira in July 2020 pending final approval from the New York Department of Education Board of Regents.
John M. Ferretti, DO, LECOM President, spoke about the benefits of the expansion, “LECOM is extending medical education to the Elmira College campus to attract students who will fill the need for physicians in the southern tier and western New York.” LECOM notes that upstate New York has a large, rural underserved population with a critical shortage of physicians.
Since 2012, LECOM has sent third- and fourth-year osteopathic medical students for clinical education at the Arnot Health System and other surrounding hospitals in Elmira. “Our relationship with the Elmira medical community and other affiliated hospitals in the region exposed LECOM students to quality training” said Richard Terry, DO, MBA, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs for LECOM at Elmira. “The affiliation demonstrated that LECOM could better serve the region by bringing all four years of medical education to Elmira.”
