AACOM Highlights Advocacy and Policy at Educating Leaders 2022


Last week, AACOM held its annual Educating Leaders conference to a sold-out crowd in Denver, Colorado. Featuring in-person and virtual sessions, Educating Leaders is the largest gathering of osteopathic medical education (OME) professionals in the nation. Bipartisan Senate Resolution Recognizes Service and Dedication of DOs and COMs Nationwide


Last month, Senators Capito (R-WV), Casey (D-PA), Grassley (R-IA), Heinrich (D-NM) and Wicker (R-MS) joined Senator Manchin (D-WV) to introduce a bipartisan designating the week of April 18-24, 2022 as ”National Osteopathic Medicine Week.”

  • Through this resolution, the Senate celebrates the role that schools of osteopathic medicine play in training the next generation of osteopathic physicians, and further helps AACOM elevate and advance OME priorities.
  • In a , AACOM President and CEO Robert A. Cain, DO, said, “National Osteopathic Medicine Week helps highlight the critical role doctors of osteopathic medicine are playing in our national healthcare system.”

Policy Update

Biden Administration Considers Loan Forgiveness; Offers IDR Relief for Student Borrowers


  • The U.S. Department of Education (ED) recently announced changes to federal student loan income-driven repayment (IDR) plans, which would allow loan forgiveness for millions of borrowers.
  • IDR programs provide loan forgiveness to borrowers who make payments tied to their income for at least 20 to 25 years.
  • ED’s one-time revision would retroactively provide credit toward loan forgiveness under IDR for any month in which a borrower made a payment. Borrowers will be credited regardless of whether they were enrolled in an IDR plan. .
  • President Biden also indicated that he is considering executive action to cancel some federal student loan debt and has urged Congress to pass legislation canceling up to $10,000 of debt per borrower.

CMS Releases FY23 IPPS Proposed Updates

  • On April 18, 2022, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) posted its fiscal year (FY) 2023 Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) . Comments on the rule may be submitted through June 17, 2022.
  • CMS proposes to change graduate medical education full-time equivalent caps for certain hospitals and to allow certain urban and rural hospitals to enter into Rural Track. For a comprehensive analysis, .

President Biden’s White House Physician to Speak at VCOM Military Promotion Ceremony in Blacksburg: Kevin C. O’Connor, DO, U.S. Army, Colonel (retired), the White House physician currently serving President Joe Biden, will be the keynote speaker during the annual Military Promotion Ceremony at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine - Virginia Campus on Friday, May 6, 2022. The Military Promotion Ceremony is an event where medical students who are members of the Health Professions Scholarship Program receive their promotions to the military rank. Upcoming NHSC Scholarship Program Deadline: for the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Scholarship Program are due by May 5, 2022 at 7:30 PM ET. For more information about the scholarship program, of AACOM’s webinar hosted with the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).

Apply for Osteopathic Health Policy Fellowship: AACOM’s is a year-long training program for osteopathic physicians and other associated health professionals to develop the skills they need to analyze, formulate and implement health policy on the local, state and national levels. Apply by May 15, 2022 for this highly competitive program.

COMs – Apply for Public Health Scholarship Program: HRSA’s Bureau of Health Workforce is awarding $39 million for 26 awards to strengthen the public health workforce. Grantees will develop scholarship programs that incentivize individuals to pursue careers in public health. Health professions schools, including colleges of osteopathic medicine, are eligible to apply. .
