AACOM & HRSA Exclusive Webinar: Student Loan Repayment Opportunity


AACOM will host an exclusive webinar with the Health Resources & Services Administration’s National Health Service Corps (NHSC) to provide students with more information on the 2022 (S2S LRP). The S2S LRP offers medical, physician assistant, dental and nursing students in their final year of school up to $120,000 in loan repayment assistance in return for service in a community of need. .

Kvaal Confirmed as Top Higher Ed and Student Aid Official at ED


Last week, the Senate voted 58-37 in favor of James Kvaal’s nomination to be the undersecretary of education, the top official overseeing higher education and student aid at the U.S. Department of Education (ED). Kvaal is a former key education advisor for the Obama administration and recently led The Institute for College Access and Success.

Urge the House to Pass the Dr. Lorna Breen Health Care Provider Protection Act


the Dr. Lorna Breen Health Care Provider Protection Act (S. 610/H.R. 1667), which aims to reduce and prevent suicide, burnout and mental and behavioral health conditions among healthcare professionals. Following passage in the Senate last month, it’s time for the House to act.

Policy Update

House Reconciliation Bill Heads to House Floor, Includes Key Provisions for OME


  • Last week, the 13 House committees completed markups of their sections of the proposed $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation bill.
  • A number of in the committee sections, notably $6 billion for the Teaching Health Center GME Program, new GME slots for rural training and $1 billion for medical schools in underserved areas.
  • The House Budget Committee will now prepare the package for a floor vote, expected before the end of the month.
  • To become law, the bill would need the support of all 50 Senate Democrats and could lose no more than three votes in the House if all Republicans vote against the bill, as expected. .

NIH Grant Supports Research Education Workforce Training: Apply now for Research Education Program for Clinical Researchers and Clinicians Grants, which support research education activities that complement and/or enhance the training of a workforce to meet the nation’s biomedical, behavioral and clinical research needs. Applications are due by November 15, 2021. .

TouroCOM-NY Professor Named Science & Technology Policy Fellow: Fernando P. Bruno, MD, MPH, associate professor in the Department of Anatomy at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine - New York (TouroCOM-NY) Middletown Campus, has been awarded a Science & Technology Policy Fellowship from the American Association for the Advancement of Science. His fellowship placement will be at the Center for Translation Research and Implementation Science, within the National Institutes of Health. .
