AACOM's Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents, 2023

Welcome all! The Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents (COSGP) is a unique organization within the AACOM, made up of presidents and vice presidents from all of the colleges of osteopathic medicine (COMs) across the country. Each COM provides a voice that amplifies the volume of our organization, and we could not be more grateful to have the support of AACOM and each individual school.

COSGP is a family, and like all families, we have encountered challenges throughout the years. During the pandemic, we watched from a distance while the front line workers modeled bravery. We grew stronger as students and became more determined to become physicians who will one day impact the world. To all osteopathic medical students- we are here for all of you, as we are you. We will support your goals, help implement your dreams, and be there with you when you encounter barriers. As an organization made completely of students, we promise to work with you to whatever degree you desire and walk alongside you to become those brave physicians we all admired in 2020.

The theme for the 2023-2024 year for COSGP is, “Growth” which speaks to the roots we plant in our leadership. We sit in these seats to grow as an organization, not just for those currently a part of COSGP, but for the students who will come after us. This theme also embodies each of you as osteopathic medical students. Each day your knowledge, patient care skills, and confidence grows, but I challenge you all to take this one step further and spread what you learn to assist in the growth of others too. Apply to be a tutor, become a mentor to a first year student, recommend a book that inspired you, or encourage someone to join you on a community service project. These small acts will contribute to both your growth and the growth of someone else.

As the famous book, “The Giving Tree '' explains, a newly planted tree provides a gift that will touch lives long after the seeds enter the ground. Throughout the life of the tree, it gives something different to the people in its presence at each given moment, and as the tree grows, its purpose grows and changes with it. This is the type of growth we aim to achieve in COSGP. We will not see the final results of our growth as an organization this year, but we will feel a slow growth. Next year, and in the years following that, we will watch from a distance as this small growth becomes something larger than us all, and we will feel proud to have been a part of it.

COSGP is proud to serve the osteopathic community and we strive to always be available to you all. We invite you to join us in “Planting the Seed” of ideas while we interact with “Sprouting Leaders” from around the country. As we continue “Budding Intentions” as the year goes on, we look forward to the time when we can “Harvest the Growth” and leave a supportive and fruitful space for the next generation of leaders.

From everyone here at COSGP, we value your efforts and commitment to serving others and look forward to an incredible year ahead.

Very Respectfully,
