Three members of AACOM’s Council of Osteopathic Librarians (COOL) were recognized with the 2023 Gerald J. Oppenheimer Cornerstone Award during the Association of American Health Sciences Libraries (AAHSL)’s Annual Meeting for their work on the AAHSL Osteopathic Membership Task Force. The task force includes COOL members Lori Fitterling, MLS, at Kansas City University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Joanne Muellenbach, MLS, at California Health Sciences University College of Osteopathic Medicine and Stephanie Ferretti, MLS, formerly of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, as well as Sandra Franklin, MLS, at Emory University and Past-President of AAHSL.

The task force was charged with reviewing the AAHSL membership categories and making a recommendation, that was ultimately approved, to allow AAHSL members from osteopathic medical schools to be eligible for full membership status. Full membership status allows AAHSL members from osteopathic schools the ability to serve on the AAHSL Board of Directors and other leadership roles.

The Gerald J. Oppenheimer Cornerstone Award, named in honor of Gerald J. Oppenheimer, the inaugural president of AAHSL, is given to an individual, group or institution selected by the association's Board of Directors. The award is given for a notable or important contribution that has assisted AAHSL in achieving its mission or had a significant impact on the profession of academic health sciences librarianship.
