  • ED plans to fix an error in the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form that will release an additional $1.8 billion in federal student aid.
  • This follows an overhaul of the FAFSA form that ED released in December 2023 for the 2024-2025 academic year.
  • The error was related to ED not including an inflation adjustment to a student’s family income. Failing to adjust for inflation would result in families demonstrating higher than realistic spending power and less aid for students.
  • ED has released a statement that it is currently updating the Federal Processing System and predicts it will send FAFSA information to schools and state agencies in early March.
