AOGME Recorded Webinar

In this webinar, Wendy Welch, PhD, Cassi Jones, DO, and Tori Makal, PhD, discuss the Community Nourishment Project, an initiative of the Southwest Virginia Graduate Medical Education Consortium (SWVA GMEC) offering a pipeline activity for pre-med and medical students, residents and faculty to bond while learning from people living in rent-controlled housing via monthly picnics and craft interaction.

The objectives of the Community Nourishment Project are to:

  • Create interaction between pre-med undergrads, medical students, residents and faculty leading to residency recruitment and retention
  • Instill cultural humility in medical students, residents and faculty for better patient outcomes
  • Combat the infamous third year “empathy drop” with reflective essays and fun interactions
  • Send each member of the pipeline to the next step equipped with lived experiences and observations to challenge any microaggressions voiced against patients in poverty by educators at that level
