Curricular Offerings

The osteopathic approach to medicine is humanistic, integrated, and innovative.

Our Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) program offers students unique exposure interactive learning environments. Through a comprehensive curriculum that includes early clinical experiences through standardized patient encounters and human-patient simulations, modern medical technology, interprofessional education activities, an ultrasound program, and clinical skills labs, our students gain practical and essential experience in identifying and addressing patient needs.

Our systems-based curriculum is based in the patient presentation model, meaning students learn primarily through studying clinically based cases that highlight the symptoms presented by the patient.

The end goal of the case-based model is to arrive at a differential diagnosis efficiently and effectively. Students will work with faculty who have scientific expertise to understand the underlying reasons for the medical issue, as well as clinical experts who will explain the clinical presentation and treatment of the issue.

Clerkship/Clinical Rotations

In their third and fourth years, students will put the art and science of being a physician into practice. Students will be matched with a clinical clerkship preceptor, at a hospital or clinic, where they will continue to work with real patients. During this process, students will receive advanced clinical training through both inpatient and outpatient clerkships in a wide range of medical settings.

In year three, there are nine required core rotations as well as an opportunity for an additional elective and a dedicated COMLEX prep block. Each of these clerkships includes a one-week on-ramp/off-ramp followed by a four-week clinical rotation. The on-ramp/off-ramp provides time for didactic learning and other practical learning experiences both in person (where possible) and virtually, preparing you to excel in your rotations.

We offer experiences in both urban and rural settings for students to experience the unique needs in these care settings to create a holistic patient care and educational experience. Rotations in third year are located throughout Wichita and Kansas, in addition to outside states such as Missouri, California, Florida, Illinois, Arizona, Michigan and more.

In their fourth year, students have greater flexibility to pursue rotations in locations and specialties aligned with their interests and career goals. This includes sub-internships, also known as audition rotations, where students function at the level of an intern. These experiences allow students to demonstrate their skills to residency programs of interest and to assess whether a program’s culture aligns with their professional aspirations. Additional elective opportunities are also available.
