COVID-19 & the GME Community

March 31, 2020

As members of the graduate medical education community, each of you are affected in a deep way by what is transpiring in the country and the world with the COVID-19 pandemic. We want to send our strong support, gratitude, and appreciation for what each of you are doing to serve patients, your community, and the nation.

We hope to serve as a forum and space for you to connect with colleagues and friends as you grapple with the crisis and its impact on your personal and professional lives. We encourage you to join us as opportunities arise to share with each other, and with AOGME, so that we can better support your efforts on the ground. To that end, I would like to invite you to join us for a discussion on the impact of the coronavirus epidemic on our membership, to be held on Wednesday, April 8 at 4:00 PM ET. We hope to learn about your experiences, your challenges, and discuss potential solutions. Members of the AOGME Residents and Fellows Council (RFC) recently engaged in similar discussions, and will continue to do so in coming weeks. As a result, they have developed and shared a list of available wellness and educational resources within the RFC. As you may be aware, AACOM is updating a web page dedicated to the coronavirus at www.aacom.org/coronavirus. Visit this page to learn about AACOM’s response to the current situation, and access resources from the colleges of osteopathic medicine and national sources. Specific to GME, the ACGME developed a page dedicated to its response on the crisis, www.acgme.org/covid-19. Visit the ACGME newsroom to access the latest updates related to COVID-19.    

Annual Business Meeting

With the cancellation of the in-person AACOM conference, the AOGME Annual Business Meeting is now rescheduled to Wednesday, April 29, from 11 AM to 12 PM ET; additional details for the virtual meeting will be shared soon. We also look forward to hosting a webinar that week, on Tuesday, April 28, on perspectives and best practices implementing Osteopathic Recognition in GME, featuring Dr. Joanne Baker, Dr. Sandra Snyder, and Dr. DeAundre Dyder. Finally, and on a positive note, we would like to congratulate our graduates and programs on a successful residency match this year. With the conclusion of the single GME accreditation system in June of this year, the success of the first single match marks a significant milestone in the transition, and signals continued success of our programs and graduates in the single system.
