2020 National Resident Matching Program Match Results Show Record Highs for Osteopathic Medical Students

(Bethesda, MD) – The results of the 2020 National Resident Matching Program (NRMP®) Match, the largest in history and the first to take place under the fully implemented single graduate medical education (GME) system, include a match rate of 90.7 percent. Unveiled Friday, March 20, these results show that among the 6,581 graduating osteopathic medical students who participated, 5,968 were matched into first-year training positions (PGY-1). Compared to 2019, 1,103 more fourth-year students of osteopathic medicine participated in the match and 1,143 more were matched.

Cain, DO, AACOM President and CEO. “Despite the changes and uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus public health crisis, the OME community once again demonstrated its resilience and unity, coming together to support one another at this crucial time, recognize the success of our students, educators, and faculty, and share resources as we look ahead to next steps for these physicians in training.”
The number of graduating osteopathic medical students seeking positions in the NRMP Match is up 121 percent since 2016. Graduates from colleges of osteopathic medicine returning to the Match after graduating in previous years and not matching to a PGY-1 position, or completing the first year of training and returning to match to another training program, had a match rate of 43.1 percent.
Osteopathic participation in the NRMP Match has grown dramatically over the past five years due to the transition to the single GME accreditation system. This transition to the single GME accreditation system officially concludes on June 30, 2020. Most former AOA programs have completed the transition to Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accreditation. The last AOA Match was held in 2019.
