Midwest Neuroscience, Neurology and Cognitive Disorders
Centers of Care works to improve diagnosis, access and person-centered care.
CurePSP’s CARES (Collaborative Approaches to Resources, Education and Support) grants reaffirm the organization’s commitment to advancing best practices in the care of rare atypical parkinsonian neurodegenerative conditions: progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), corticobasal degeneration (CBD) and multiple system atrophy (MSA). Administered through the CurePSP Centers of Care network — 36 medical institutions across the U.S. and Canada — CARES supports multi-center, interprofessional projects that address person-centered care models, access to care, needs of underserved populations and education for the medical community. For its most recent funding cycle, CurePSP allocated a total of $130,000 to support three collaborative projects involving seven medical institutions, illustrating the organization’s strategic investment in practical, care-focused research that can be implemented across its Centers of Care.

The funded projects each address distinct gaps in care and knowledge. This funded study is a collaboration between Michigan State University and the University of Michigan and targets communication impairments common in PSP, CBD and MSA. Investigators will evaluate the usefulness of a speech amplification device on voice symptoms and communication intelligibility for affected individuals. This project exemplifies CARES’ person-centered approach by testing a practical intervention aimed at improving daily function and quality of life for people living with these disorders.

Together, these CARES projects illustrate CurePSP’s strategy of leveraging its Centers of Care to support research that is collaborative, clinically relevant and focused on improving care delivery.
