Expansion of graduate medical education programs to strengthen healthcare in Dona Ana County, New Mexico.
Enhancing and Expanding GME in Dona Ana County, NM is presented as a focused initiative led through Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Graduate Medical Education (GME) program to support GME expansion as a strategic priority to grow medical workforce development and student success. This effort emphasizes establishing strong community-based partnerships in advance of student matriculation, ensuring that clinical training opportunities and affiliated residency programs are available across the region, including Dona Ana County and surrounding areas.

Through this program Burrell COM has affiliated with multiple clinical sites and health systems to create a distributed network of training environments. Affiliated programs include family medicine placements at Memorial Medical Center Alamogordo, Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center, Hidalgo Medical Services, and Medicos de El Centro (MDEC). Internal medicine affiliations include programs with Health Education Services (HES)/Mountain View Regional Medical Center, Las Palmas del Sol Healthcare, and HES/Northwest Healthcare (Tucson). This program also lists osteopathic neuromusculoskeletal medicine and transitional year affiliations with HES/Mountain View Regional Medical Center and Las Palmas del Sol Healthcare. These partnerships form a foundation for delivering continuity and variety in clinical experiences for trainees originating from, or training in, Dona Ana County.

Programs currently under development relevant to rural and regional needs include Family Medicine, a Psychiatry Rural Training Track and additional Transitional Year offerings. These initiative aims to respond to local healthcare workforce shortages and rural training needs, intending to grow the number and types of residency slots available to medical graduates. By prioritizing both primary care specialties and training tracks tailored to rural settings, the initiative seeks to increase the likelihood that trainees will remain in the region to practice, thereby strengthening access to care in Dona Ana County.
