Integrative Pharmacological Sciences Training Program (IPSTP)
Date Published March 17, 2026
Interdisciplinary pharmacological sciences training program developing diverse trainees for drug discovery and collaborative research skills.
The Integrative Pharmacological Sciences Training Program (IPSTP) at Michigan State University is designed to prepare trainees to advance knowledge in pharmacological sciences and therapeutic discovery through an integrated, interdisciplinary education. The program’s stated mission is to develop diverse trainees who are fluent in the principles of pharmacological sciences and comfortable communicating and collaborating with peers across disciplinary boundaries. IPSTP emphasizes the broad scope of knowledge required for modern pharmacology and drug discovery, bringing together core disciplines including chemistry, molecular biology, biochemistry, cellular and integrative physiology, and biostatistics, as well as the interpretation of complex data sets.
IPSTP is structured to provide coherent training that reflects the multifaceted nature of pharmacological research. The curriculum includes courses, boot camps, and additional activities aimed at equipping students with the technical skills and conceptual frameworks needed for in vivo pharmacology and drug discovery. The program highlights the importance of cross-disciplinary literacy: trainees are expected to acquire competence in experimental approaches and data analysis across multiple fields so they can effectively engage in collaborative projects and translational research endeavors.
Prospective students join the IPSTP through an application process that requires submission of a form outlining how their proposed project fits within in vivo pharmacology or drug discovery and how participation in the IPSTP would improve their training. Applications are reviewed holistically by the IPSTP Executive Committee on an annual basis, ensuring that admissions decisions consider the overall fit of candidates’ research interests and training needs within the program’s interdisciplinary framework. This review process reflects the program’s commitment to fostering diverse trainees and tailoring training experiences to individual career development goals.
