Mekong One Health Innovation Program (MOHIP)
Date Published March 17, 2026
Mekong One Health Program aims to strengthen capacity for zoonotic disease prevention.
The Mekong One Health Innovation Program (MOHIP) is a multi-country initiative focused on capacity building and public health across the Greater Mekong region. Funded through a US Department of State grant of $857,026, MOHIP works within Laos PDR, Vietnam, and Thailand to address interconnected health challenges at the human-animal-environment interface, with a specific emphasis on zoonotic diseases and regional capacity strengthening. As presented in the project listing, the program's scope in each country encompasses capacity building activities and public health measures targeted to zoonotic disease threats. In Thailand, MOHIP additionally highlights work related to fascioliasis (liver fluke), indicating a targeted interest in parasitic zoonoses relevant to regional health systems and affected communities.
MOHIP represents a coordinated regional effort to bolster local and national public health capabilities in the Mekong subregion. The project's activities, as described, prioritize building workforce and institutional capacity to detect, prevent, and respond to zoonotic diseases through strengthened public health systems. By operating across Laos PDR, Vietnam, and Thailand, the program seeks to harmonize approaches to common health threats in transboundary contexts, recognizing that zoonotic disease risks and their drivers frequently transcend national borders in the Mekong basin.
MOHIP's inclusion of both general capacity building and disease-specific attention such as the Thailand focus on fascioliasis' signals an approach that balances systemwide public health strengthening with targeted interventions for priority zoonoses. The program's regional posture enables exchange of best practices, shared learning and coordinated preparedness among partner countries. This cross-border collaboration is positioned to support improvements in surveillance, diagnostics, workforce training and other foundational public health functions essential for One Health outcomes.
