Northeast Mental Health, Substance Use and Behavioral Health
Academic Detailing Program that provides tailored, evidence-based opioid prescribing education and virtual clinician consultations statewide.
The RowanSOM Academic Detailing Program is an interactive outreach initiative offered by the Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine in partnership with NJ CARES and the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs to support New Jersey healthcare professionals who have opioid prescribing authority. The program is designed to engage clinicians in individualized, evidence-based education through one-on-one dialogue with trained program staff. Sessions assess the needs of individual prescribers and their practices and deliver tailored clinical recommendations and educational resources aimed at refining or remediating opioid prescribing practices. Central to the program is the availability of clinicians with specific expertise in opioid prescribing who meet with New Jersey providers during scheduled one-hour virtual meetings customized to address each provider's clinical questions, prescribing challenges, and practice-level needs. These virtual sessions are complemented by ongoing virtual clinical case studies that explore real-world scenarios related to opioid prescribing, pain management, and opioid use disorder, providing repeated, practice-relevant learning opportunities.

The program extends beyond individualized detailing by hosting statewide Opioid Safety Grand Rounds. These Grand Rounds are offered virtually and feature free reviews of clinical case studies related to opioid prescribing, pain, or opioid use disorder. Participants can join live webinars or access enduring courses, and continuing medical education credits are available for attendees. The program also maintains an Opioid Prescribing Issues Blog where submitted questions are reviewed and answered by the program's team of doctors, with responses posted for wider access. Providers can submit opioid-prescribing questions to be reviewed within a 24-hour timeframe and view previously answered questions to inform their practice. Resource materials are curated to include evidence-based clinical recommendations and guidance from recognized sources such as NaRCAD and SNJMATCOE, offering clinicians consolidated, authoritative references to support safer prescribing.

Participation in Academic Detailing Sessions is free and intended for all prescribing healthcare professionals in New Jersey who wish to improve their opioid-prescribing practices. The program emphasizes interactive, customized education and invites clinicians to submit requests to take part in the service. Continuing medical education credits are available for all participants, supporting both professional development and the adoption of recommended practices. Overall, the RowanSOM Academic Detailing Program integrates individualized clinician consultations, practical case-based learning, accessible resource materials and state-level Grand Rounds to create a multi-faceted educational platform aimed at improving opioid prescribing, enhancing provider competence, and addressing pain and opioid use disorder management across New Jersey.
