University of Michigan Kidney, Urology and Hematology Research Training Network
Date Published April 20, 2026
The University of Michigan Kidney, Urology and Hematology Research Training Network (UM KUHR) is a coordinated training initiative dedicated to identifying, nurturing, and preparing the next generation of scientific leaders focused on kidney, urological and hematological diseases. UM KUHR's mission is to elevate trainee research efforts by deepening understanding of physiology and pathophysiology, accelerating discovery of novel therapeutics and improving diagnosis and treatment across the KUH domain. The network unites partnering institutions and leverages a multi-core structure to provide comprehensive support for trainees. Its Administrative Core ensures strong coordination and communication across institutions, the network cores, and the national KUHR network. The Networking Core is charged with optimizing research interactions among trainees across the national network and establishing programs designed to attract and sustain emerging scientists.
The Professional Development Core focuses on enhancing career preparedness through high-quality research training and mentoring, while the Training Core concentrates on recruiting outstanding trainees and delivering hands-on experience, mentorship, and comprehensive knowledge aimed at developing long-term investigators.
UM KUHR provides a range of trainee resources, a summer internship program, mentoring opportunities and events. The program also highlights core service use expectations and prioritization: highest priority is given to investigators conducting kidney-related research that is federally funded, those funded by DCC Pilot and Feasibility grants, and early-career investigators beginning kidney research without funding; next priority is given to researchers supported by non-federal agencies or conducting unfunded work to support federal grant submissions.
