WVSOM Vice President Receives Statewide Advocate Award

An administrator at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) was honored during a statewide conference for her career as a longtime community advocate. Drema Hill, PhD, MSP, WVSOM’s vice president for community engagement and development, was named the recipient of the 2022 Small Communities, Big Solutions Advocate award. The Small Communities, Big Solutions Conference is hosted annually by the Alliance for Economic Development of Southern West Virginia, the West Virginia Community Development Hub and Coalfield Development.

Hill said she was honored to receive the award, “I’ve spent many years working to build small community infrastructure in West Virginia. My goal is for our state to be prepared to create sustainable programs to improve the lives of West Virginians. PCOM Medical Student Named AMWA Global Health Fellow

Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) student Briana Krewson (DO ’23) was recently named an Anne C. Carter Global Health Fellow by the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA). Krewson was chosen from a pool of applicants from across the country and will serve in the 2021-2023 fellowship program.

“I am incredibly honored and humbled to have been selected for this fellowship,” shared Ms. Krewson. “I am excited to work alongside the other fellows and hope that we can implement projects that effect change internationally,” continued Krewson.

Ms. Krewson will have $1,000 to fund her capstone project as a Global Health Fellow, which will focus on either a local community-based public health issue or work through an international AMWA-affiliated clinic. Read more about AMWA and Krewson’s work to serve her community and beyond.

PCOM Georgia Medical Students Plan December Wellness Events

PCOM Georgia students have planned two wellness events for local residents in early December.

The first event will be held on Friday, December 3, from 6:00 – 9:00 PM ET, where PCOM Georgia students, along with faculty members, will take blood pressure readings and distribute blood pressure information at the Jolly Holly Day in Suwanee Town Center, located in downtown Suwanee, Georgia.

The second event will have PCOM Georgia HEARTS Club members working with Walgreens and the Lawrenceville Cooperative Ministry to administer free flu shots to the uninsured on Saturday, December 4, from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM. PCOM South Georgia Medical Students Educate Community on Health and Wellness

Stroke and heart attack prevention, breast cancer awareness, healthy lifestyle choices and blood pressure screenings are just a few of the ways PCOM South Georgia students are educating the community through “We Are Moultrie: Healthier Together.”

The student-led initiative provides an opportunity for students to serve their community, focusing on preventative care through outreach events, education and health screenings. Read more about the initiative and students who will be providing care.

ICOM's Future Military DOs Embark on a "Bold Quest"

Eleven student doctors with military ties at the Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine (ICOM), alongside a small group of faculty and staff, had an opportunity to participate in a cooperative exercise involving military and civilian members, as well as partner nations. Known as Bold Quest, the purpose of this annual event is to improve interoperability across systems, services and nations. ICOM was the first and only medical school in the U.S. invited to participate in this event, held at Camp Atterbury Army Base in Indiana. Read more about the event and the students who represented ICOM.

CHSU-COM Dean Graneto Receives Hispanic Health Leadership Award

John Graneto, DO, dean of the California Health Sciences University College of Osteopathic Medicine (CHSU-COM), was one of four honorees who received the 2021 Hispanic Health Leadership Award from the National Hispanic Health Foundation.

“It is an honor to receive this award that recognizes the historic endeavor of establishing an osteopathic medical school and health sciences university in the Central Valley,” said Dr. John Graneto, dean of CHSU-COM “Here in the richest state, our region has some of the poorest outcomes, especially for our Hispanic/Latinx community. We are making strides towards reversing that trend and expanding access to health care and health equality for everyone in our community, especially the rural and underserved populations.” Read more about the recognition and reasons Dr. Graneto was chosen.

Save the Date for Science: DMU Research Symposium

Everyone is invited to enjoy an enlightening, educational and enjoyable afternoon of exploring a wide range of scientific topics at the virtual DMU Research Symposium on Thursday, December 2, beginning at 12:00 PM CT. Now in its 12th year, the symposium will feature all the aspects that have made the annual event a growing success since 2010. Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine (DMU-COM) Students and scientists will present 85 research posters and give six five-minute oral presentations. Posters are available online for viewing in advance of the symposium; during the event, breakout sessions will allow participants to discuss topic areas with poster presenters and other attendees. Stanley Perlman, MD, PhD, professor of microbiology and immunology at the University of Iowa, will give a keynote address, “39 Years of Coronavirus Research: Insights into COVID-19.” Read more about the event and how to register.

AZCOM/MWU Names Kevin Cabrera Student Doctor of the Year

Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine of Midwestern University has named Kevin Cabrera (DO ‘23) Student Doctor of the Year. Mr. Cabrera was recognized for his dedication to the University and community and his commitment to cultural diversity. He is a member of Midwestern’s Diversity and Inclusion Community Outreach Task Force and has been heavily involved in leadership and mentorship roles involving Latino students. Prior to attending AZCOM/MWU, Mr. Cabrera earned a master’s degree in Global Health with an emphasis on diabetic screening protocols in underserved international populations.
