Members of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine South Georgia (PCOM South Georgia)’s Dermatology Club are on a mission to inform people in the Sunbelt about the importance of protecting their skin from sun damage. ICOM Students Clean Up Adopted Roadway

A group of second-year students at the Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine (ICOM) dedicated a portion of their weekend to cleaning up a two-mile stretch of roadway near campus through the local "Adopt-A-Highway" program. Organized by ICOM's Student Government Association, the college officially adopted this roadway back in 2020 and students have been dedicated to taking care of it ever since. KCU-COM Medical Student Earns Prestigious Fellowship at NIH Laboratories

Third-year medical student Mahan Hadjian started working in the lab of Abdulbaki Agbas, PhD, MSc, professor of biosciences, as soon as he arrived at Kansas City University College of Osteopathic Medicine. After consulting with Dr. Agbas, Hadjian decided to take a gap year after he was offered a prestigious fellowship at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) where he will work with Richard Youle, PhD, who does a significant amount work with mitochondria, mitophagy and autophagy in Parkinson’s disease. The West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) hosted a presentation for Leadership West Virginia, an annual statewide program that educates government, business, social and other leaders on issues impacting and resources available to West Virginia. The 2023 class comprised 58 leaders from across the state and WVOSM was a key part of the healthcare session. Read more at The Register-Herald.


VCOM-Virginia Supports Local Elementary School with Anatomy Academy

The Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine Virginia Campus (VCOM-Virginia) has initiated its inaugural Anatomy Academy, aimed at benefiting fifth-grade students in a local Christiansburg, Virginia, elementary school. The primary objectives are to instill healthy lifestyle choices and ignite a passion for higher education in these young minds.

VCOM-Virginia students conduct teaching sessions in small groups, utilizing anatomical models and hands-on activities. Groups meet for seven sessions with two VCOM-Virginia student mentors for every five to eight elementary students. This VCOM-Virginia program is one of only 28 active Anatomy Academy initiatives in Title I elementary schools nationwide.

Participation in this program is based on a competitive application process. In this first year, 20 VCOM-Virginia students were selected from a pool of 50 applicants based on experience working with children of this age group and interest in the program overall. California Health Sciences University College of Osteopathic Medicine (CHSU-COM) medical students and faculty attended the 34th annual “Continuing Medical Education by the Bay” conference hosted by the Osteopathic Physicians & Surgeons of California (OPSC) in October. CHSU-COM medical students and faculty held important roles in promoting the distinctive practice of osteopathic medicine.

“CHSU-COM had the strongest student showing of all three schools at the conference,” said Lisa Chun, DO, associate dean of osteopathic clinical education and simulation. Read more about the conference and student involvement.

VCOM-Carolinas Mobile Medical Unit Outreach in Spartanburg, SC

The Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine Carolinas Campus (VCOM-Carolinas) Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) was at The Bridge at Greenstreet in Spartanburg, South Carolina, on November 7, 2023. The Bridge at Green Street is an arm of First Baptist Church Spartanburg which “strives to partner with our neighbors in working toward spiritual, physical, emotional, and financial wholeness.”

The MMU is part of VCOM-Carolinas' outreach programs. As part of VCOM-Carolinas’ mission, medical education provides experience for future physicians to become national and international leaders through exemplary field experiences, academic preparation and a deep commitment to healthy communities.
