Curricular Offerings

The Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) program at DYU-COM is a four-year curriculum designed to prepare students for residency, licensure, and a meaningful career in medicine. The first two years are spent on campus, building a strong foundation in biomedical sciences and clinical reasoning through a blend of traditional lectures, specialized labs, small-group case-based discussions, and self-directed online modules. Students also gain early hands-on experience with Simulation Medicine, Standardized Patients, and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM), all of which are reinforced by evidence-based teaching practices that promote active learning and clinical proficiency.

In the third and fourth years, students transition into clinical rotations and clerkships at our established partner sites, where they apply their training in core specialties, including Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Psychiatry, and Emergency Medicine. Each rotation includes direct patient care and longitudinal courses in OMM, research opportunities, and residency preparation.

In addition, students have the opportunity to pursue elective rotations in a wide range of specialties such as cardiology, radiology, orthopedics, anesthesiology, and more. This will allow students to explore individual interests and career goals, while deepening their understanding of subspecialty care. Grounded in osteopathic principles and emphasizing whole-person care, DYU-COM equips graduates with the skills, compassion, and confidence to serve patients in diverse settings and meet the evolving needs of today’s healthcare system.

Clerkship/Clinical Rotations

DYU-COM delivers a regionally distributed clinical education model that combines breadth of patient exposure with strong preceptor mentorship and progressive autonomy.

Beginning in the third year, students complete core clerkships across geographic hubs—Western New York, Central New York, Upstate New York, and Long Island—allowing learners to train in diverse communities while benefiting from consistent academic oversight and assessment standards. Integration of osteopathic principles and practice (OPP) throughout the clinical years.

Students apply OMM in inpatient and ambulatory settings under faculty supervision, with structured opportunities to employ manual medicine for common musculoskeletal, perioperative, and symptom management indications. Longitudinal didactics reinforce whole-person care, social determinants of health, and interprofessional collaboration.

Third year core clerkships include Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Psychiatry, Family Medicine, additional elective rotations, and integrated OPP/OMM experiences. Fourth-year training emphasizes sub-internships, emergency medicine/critical care, ambulatory specialties, advanced electives, supporting residency readiness, and audition rotations.

Assessment combines preceptor evaluations, COMAT subject exams, direct observation, clinical skills assessments, and reflective practice. Students receive coaching and academic support tied to clinical performance data to promote steady growth and strong residency outcomes.
