Beth A. Longenecker, DO, Named New Dean of OU-HCOM’s Athens Campus

Beth A. Longenecker, DO, has been named the new Dean of the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-HCOM)’s Athens campus, effective June 1. Dr. Longenecker will become the second female Dean for the college since its creation in 1975.
In an OU-HCOM press release, Dr. Longenecker said that she was eager to get involved with community outreach programs as part of her new role.
“I’m very excited by the interest in health care in southeastern Ohio, and the impact we can make through the community health clinics and the outreach,” she said. “And I’m very interested in helping to foster growth in that area. I’m also excited to be part of a campus where we have a school of engineering, a school of leadership and other colleges that can work together to make an impact on medical education.”
Dr. Longenecker is currently the Associate Dean for Clinical Education and Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine of Midwestern University (CCOM). She also currently serves as President of the Illinois Osteopathic Medical Society, as an Evaluator for the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA), and as a Trustee for the Foundation for Osteopathic Emergency Medicine (FOEM).
She graduated with a BA in musicology with a minor in piano performance from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1987. That same year, she began her medical training. In 2000, she became board certified in emergency medicine.
From 2002-05, she was Program Director for St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx, NY. Afterward, she became program director of Mount Sinai Medical Center and the Miami Heart Institute in Miami Beach, FL. From 2013-15, she served as Associate Dean for Clinical Sciences at William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine (WCUCOM).
Dr. Longenecker has also previously served as Vice Chair of the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians (ACOEP) Research Committee and was awarded the ACOEP Women in Medicine Leadership Award.
