AACOM Releases New Applicant and Matriculant Report

The recently-released 2018 AACOMAS Profile: Applicant and Matriculant Report provides a snapshot of the osteopathic medical school applicants and matriculants for the 2018 entering class. The annual report summarizes AACOMAS data on overall mean GPA, mean MCAT scores, matriculant distributions across the U.S., and more.

U.S. colleges of osteopathic medicine (COMs) matriculated 7,575 applicants to the 2018 entering class, 7,415 (98 percent) of whom applied through AACOMAS and were matched to their applicant records used to produce this report. Highlights of the report include:

• The mean age was 23 for the class matriculating in 2018, down from 24 in 2017.
• For the single race/ethnicity category, the percentage of under-represented minorities decreased, from 10.3 percent in 2017 to 9.6 percent in 2018.
• Matriculants' post-baccalaureate overall mean GPA is the highest reported at 3.71, followed by graduate GPAs at 3.64, all-coursework at 3.49, and baccalaureate at 3.54.
• The mean scores for the new MCAT are as follows:
• Psychological, social, and biological foundations of behavior: 126.52
• Biological and biochemical foundations of living systems: 126.16
• Chemical and physical foundations of biological systems: 125.79
• Critical analysis and reasoning skills: 125.36
• Total for all sections: 503.83
