AACOM is proud to welcome the Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (SHSU-COM) in Montgomery County, TX as one of its newest members. AACOM now represents 36 colleges of osteopathic medicine (COMs) in 33 states. The addition of the Sam Houston campus represents an important milestone for the growing osteopathic medical profession.
At its August 23-25, 2019 meeting, the American Osteopathic Association (AOA)’s Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) granted SHSU-COM pre-accreditation status, pending further submission of information and following a satisfactory site visit.
SHSU-COM will be located just south of South Loop 336 in Conroe, TX, in a 108,000 square foot medical building on a 7.3-acre property, with substantial completion expected by December 2019. According to the school, a future phase two expansion will add an additional 108,000 square feet.
The first medical school in Montgomery County and the third osteopathic medical school in Texas, SHSU-COM hopes to prepare primary care doctors who will practice in rural and underserved communities in East Texas. Currently, Texas ranks 47th out of 50 states in primary care physicians. With a ratio of one primary care physician for every 4,510 people, SHSU-COM hopes to address this significant shortage.
