Dr. Shannon, Former AACOM President and CEO, Receives AAMC Special Recognition Award

During the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC)’s 2019 Annual Conference Gala, Stephen C. Shannon, DO, MPH, Immediate Past AACOM President and CEO, was recognized with the AAMC Special Recognition Award. The award was given to Dr. Shannon for his leadership, skillful collaboration, and steadfast promotion of medicine and health professions education. During his acceptance, Dr. Shannon voiced his gratitude for being in a welcoming position for interprofessional collaboration, noting his work with other organizations including with the AAMC, the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). He also noted the tremendous growth of osteopathic medicine, including its change from a regional to a national profession and the doubling of the number of colleges and overall medical students.
Dr. Shannon spoke about his hopes for the future of medical education and the medical profession as a whole in his award video, “I would like to see the house of medicine in 50 years be much more diverse, with a better focus on professionalism and ethics. To think in terms of the big picture and to think in terms of population health and social determinants of health, but also to work with the other professions and be open to change.”
