Each morning at Educating Leaders 2020, the day's activities and events will begin with presentations from the conference's plenary speakers, centered on the theme of "Advocating Wellness, Advancing Education." This year, three engaging speakers will lead our attendees through the following topics:

Wednesday, March 25

Danielle Ofri, MD, PhD, will explore the emotional side of medicine and how it impacts patient care in her talk, "What Doctors Feel."  Dr. Ofri is one of the foremost speakers about the doctor-patient relationship and bringing humanity back to health care. She is an attending physician at Bellevue Hospital, a Clinical Professor of Medicine at New York University, and writes regularly for The New York Times about medicine and the critical connection between doctor and patient. In her critically acclaimed book, What Doctors Feel: How Emotions Affect the Practice of Medicine, she upends stereotypes in the medical world and explores the hidden emotional world of the doctor and its impact on patient care. Her forthcoming book, When We Do Harm: A Doctor Confronts Medical Error, will be published in April of this year.

Thursday, March 26

Helen Fisher, PhD, will offer attendees a glimpse into the neuroscience behind personality in her talk, "The Chemistry of Personality: How Different People Think and Work." Dr. Fisher is a biological anthropologist, a Senior Research Fellow at the Kinsey Institute, and Chief Scientific Advisor to internet dating site Match.com. She has conducted extensive research and written six books on the evolution and future of human sex, love, marriage, gender differences in the brain, and how personality style shapes who we are and whom we love. In 2015, Business Insider listed her as one of the "Fifteen Most Amazing Women in Science." Currently, she is applying her knowledge of brain chemistry to discuss the neuroscience of business leadership and innovation.

Friday, March 27

During his talk titled "Empathy Erosion and Enhancement in Medical Education and Practice of Medicine," Mohammadreza Hojat, PhD, will remind us about the important relationship between wellness and empathy. Dr. Hojat is Research Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior and Director of the Jefferson Longitudinal Study, Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University. He is a licensed psychologist and published over 200 articles in peer-reviewed journals. The expanded and updated edition of his seminal book: Empathy in Health in Health Professions Education and Patient Care was published by Springer in 2016. Dr. Hojat’s research on empathy has received broad media coverage, featured in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Philadelphia Inquirer, on NPR and appearing in various television segments.
