This month AOGME held its first GME Development Institute, Strategies to Advance GME Growth in Medically Underserved Rural and Urban Areas, a 3-hour virtual event hosted by the AOGME Council of GME Leaders that provided the latest information, best practices, resources and education on GME growth in medically underserved areas from nationally renowned experts in GME development. Topics covered include successful models for GME growth, federal and state funding opportunities and strategies, how to form consortia to support GME growth, growing GME in primary care and non-primary care specialties, identifying hospitals that are prime for GME development and more. The program gained 180 registrants and received positive feedback from participants. Access the program guide.

AACOM/AIAMC Virtual Half-Day Program on Evolving Landscape of Medical Education: Where do IAMCs and Community-Based Teaching Hospitals Fit in this Ever-Changing Space?

The AIAMC and AACOM presented a joint 3-hour virtual half-day program on June 13, 2023 on articulating the value of community-based education and healthcare. This informative and interactive program included learning about trends in community-based hospitals, articulating the value of the AIAMC’s mission, and sharing of experiences and identifying new opportunities for community-based education programs. The program concluded with a shared value proposition and elevator pitch for attendees to communicate to their C-suites and other leaders. View the program recording.

The AACOM UME-GME Task Force

AACOM Board of Deans established the UME-GME Steering Committee in 2022 to address the transition from undergraduate medical education (UME) to graduate medical education (GME), improve graduate level osteopathic medical education and strengthen the osteopathic model of medical education. This three-year effort will be led by a 15-member steering committee, chaired by AACOM Board Member Brian Kessler, DO, dean and chief academic officer at the Campbell University Jerry M. Wallace School of Osteopathic Medicine. A newly published web page will provide regular updates on the task force's activities.

The AACOM UME-GME Task Force seeks additional residents, both current and incoming, to join this effort focused on three aspects of osteopathic medical education (OME): the transition to residency, graduate level osteopathic training and strengthening the OME model. The AACOM UME-GME Task Force's Unmatched Students Action Group is developing a database of research fellowship opportunities for students who do not match to help position them for success in the next match cycle. Please feel free to enter your institution's or other affiliated research opportunities into this document. Please contact gme-initiatives@aacom.org if interested in participating or for more information.
