The Graduate Medical Education (GME) Development Fellowship is designed to foster leaders in GME development. During this 10-month interactive program, fellows will learn the latest on GME development strategies, collaborate with national experts and craft capstone projects to support their institutions.

What Will You Learn?

Educational topics include:

  • Comprehensive GME Development: Learn the essentials including site assessments, timelines, strategic planning and success stories from newly launched programs.
  • GME Financing and Funding: Advance your understanding of GME finance, grant writing, funding opportunities and state Medicaid initiatives.
  • Innovative GME Partnerships: Explore unique partnership models, including collaborations with Tribal organizations, Veterans Affairs, federally qualified health centers and rural hospitals.
  • Program Accreditation and Specialties: Gain insights on accreditation processes, with a focus on high-demand and rural residency specialties like Family Medicine, Psychiatry and General Surgery.
  • Rural GME Development: Understand the structure and funding of Rural Track Training Programs and how to leverage rural hospitals as prime locations for GME.
  • Learning Community and Resources: Join a collaborative learning community and access essential resources to support your GME program’s success.

Anyone charged with advancing GME development at their institution, including:

  • Senior Leadership Roles: Deans, GME Deans, Clinical Deans, Health System Leaders and Designated Institutional Officials (DIOs) directly involved in supporting GME development and expansion.
  • State GME/Workforce Development Leaders: Individuals involved in shaping, funding, coordinating or supporting statewide GME development and workforce development initiatives
  • Aspiring Leaders: Individuals aiming to broaden or deepen their expertise in GME, including areas such as GME finance, state-based funding and accreditation.

  • Experienced GME Professionals: Individuals with significant experience in GME development seeking to fill gaps in their knowledge and skill set.

  • Institutional GME Advocates: Anyone responsible for advancing GME development within their institution.

About the Fellowship

The GME Development Fellowship is an innovative partnership between AACOM and the University of North Carolina Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research. Fellows will meet monthly during interactive virtual learning sessions and will pair with GME experts to serve as mentors. Fellows must work with their mentor to compose their own capstone project in GME development, which will be submitted as a presentation at Educating Leaders 2026, the AACOM annual conference.
