General Information

Ranked among the country’s top medical schools, UNE COM is nationally recognized for leadership in primary care, rural medicine, geriatric healthcare, and osteopathic medicine. Welcome to the only osteopathic medical school in New England. Located in Portland, Maine, UNE's College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM) campus is a close-knit community with convenient access to urban opportunities that includes state-of-the-art facilities for medical research, anatomical study, manual medicine, and the development of foundational clinical skills.

Recognized by U.S. News & World Report as a leader in osteopathic medical education, we have a substantial clinical campus structure and academic affiliations with community-based hospital systems in the region and throughout the Northeast. Through rigorous academic study, coordinated with exploration and practice in the dissection lab, clinical skills lab, and clinical settings, students acquire a deep understanding of structural human anatomy and become excellent practitioners of both traditional medicine specialties and osteopathic manipulative medicine.

In 2025, UNE COM will be relocated to a newly constructed the Harold and Bibby Alfond Center for Health Sciences in Portland, Maine on the Portland Campus. The move will allow UNE COM to train more doctors and anatomists, and bring together all of UNE’s health professions programs on an interprofessional campus. UNE's Portland Campus for the Health Sciences houses Maine's only College of Dental Medicine, the School of Pharmacy, and the Westbrook College of Health Professions, which offers undergraduate and graduate programs in several allied health fields. The 41-acre campus also includes the Center for Global Humanities, Art Gallery, and Maine Women Writers Collection.

Mission Statement

The University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine fosters healthcare leaders across the continuum in undergraduate, graduate, and continuing medical education to advance exceptional osteopathic healthcare locally and globally through practice, research, scholarship, education, and community health.

Students are immersed in team-based scenarios that model the communication, critical thinking and problem solving needed in all health care professions.
  • Innovation Hall is a Portland landmark. At its center is UNE's large conference room and pre-event reception area, which have been the backdrop for events ranging from gubernatorial debates and academic symposiums, to TEDx Dirigo and regional awards galas. Also in Innovation Hall are the Interprofessional Simulation and Innovation Center, both featured in a separate virtual tour destination, Graduate Admissions and UNE Online office, and a collection of classrooms and study spaces.
  • The Josephine S. Abplanalp Library is open 24 hours a day with access to online and traditional collections, as well as in-depth research, special collections and databases. The library offers both quiet study space and group study spaces for collaborative work. The Abplanalp Library is also home to the Maine Women Writers Collection, a permanently endowed collection that is designated as a national Literary Landmark.

Students perform oral inspections, nutritional counseling, x-rays, fluoride treatments and more.
  • The Portland Campus includes numerous specialized labs for the health professions, such as purpose-built occupational therapy and physical therapy labs, as well as UNE's Motion Analysis Lab, a technologically-advanced learning space for students to observe and measure human motion. Students enjoy modern, comfortable classrooms and study areas across the campus.
  • Historic Alumni Hall, which was the sole building on campus when UNE's predecessor Westbrook Seminary was established in 1834, has been restored to celebrate its rich alumni history. It now provides office space, classrooms, a sitting parlor, event space and a library annex for student study.
  • UNE's Art Gallery on the Portland Campus presents imaginative and thought-provoking shows that are open to the public. Curricular Offerings

UNE COM offers two degree programs: Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine & Master of Science (M.S.) in Clinical Anatomy. The Master's of Clinical Anatomy offers three tracks: Teaching, Research and Medical School.

The UNE COM curriculum is designed to develop osteopathic primary care and other specialized physicians who are skilled in health promotion and illness prevention, as well as the delivery of healthcare to the ill. To that end, UNE COM provides an innovative, contemporary, patient-focused curriculum that fosters life-long, self-directed, evidence-based learning and professional development. UNECOM students spend the first two years of the program on the University of New England (UNE) campus in Biddeford, ME.

During the first and second years, students will be exposed to patients in clinical settings, and are required to demonstrate clinical skills competency to progress in the program. Our innovative, integrated curriculum is dedicated to helping students acquire a deep understanding of structural human anatomy through rigorous academic study, coordinated with exploration and practice in the dissection lab, clinical skills lab, and in the clinic. A thorough grounding in the manual skills of osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) is provided in the first two years, and supplemented, reinforced, and expanded in Years 3 and 4.

In addition to being focused on clinical experiences and competency, we value the role of research in all educational, clinical, and basic science activities. Our Center for Excellence in the Neurosciences endeavors to make innovative discoveries in the neurosciences. The Center of Biomedical Research Excellence for the Study of Pain and Sensory Function works toward an understanding of the neurobiology of chronic pain, and the discovery and development of new therapies. Scheduled learning sessions include traditional didactic lectures, interactive problem solving sessions, facilitated case-based learning, patient case study discussions, hands-on laboratory exercises, panel discussions, demonstrations, and clinically focused encounters with standardized and real patients. The last two years of predoctoral training focuses on experiential learning in a clinical setting to further develop individual and team learning and to expand clinical acumen.

The entire third year curriculum is conducted, over a twelve-month period, at one of the designated Clinical Campuses, located throughout New England and the Northeast region. Year 4 students continue their learning with selective and elective clinical rotations at UNE COM-approved programs of their choice.
