If you've spent any time talking with medical students lately, you've probably noticed something has changed. The excitement that comes with beginning the journey to becoming a physician is still there. So is determination to succeed and serve. But increasingly, those conversations are accompanied by questions about how they will be able to finance their medical school journey; questions that have become more urgent as federal student loan programs continue to evolve.
For many students, these changes have created uncertainty at precisely the moment when they should be focused on preparing to care for patients. As educators and advocates for osteopathic medical education, we cannot control every change in the financial landscape. We can, however, ensure that our students have access to trusted information, meaningful guidance and responsible options that help them make informed decisions.
That's why AACOM has announced a new strategic collaboration with Sallie Mae.
At first glance, this may seem like a straightforward financial services announcement. In reality, it reflects something much larger: our ongoing commitment to removing unnecessary barriers for students who have already committed themselves to one of society's most demanding, and most needed, professions.
Keeping the Focus on Medicine, Not Financial Uncertainty
Every year, colleges of osteopathic medicine educate nearly one-third of all medical students in the United States. Many of these future physicians will go on to practice primary care, serve rural communities and provide care in places where physician shortages are already being felt. With projections showing the nation could face a shortage of more than 187,000 physicians by 2037, helping qualified students complete their medical education is not simply a financial issue—it is a healthcare imperative.
The pathway to becoming a physician has never been easy, nor should it be. The academic rigor and personal commitment required to earn the privilege of caring for patients are essential to the profession. Financial uncertainty, however, is a different kind of challenge.
When financing becomes more complicated or less predictable, talented students can find themselves spending valuable time worrying about how they will continue their education rather than concentrating on becoming outstanding physicians. That is not good for students, medical schools or the patients who will one day depend on them.
As federal lending programs continue to change, AACOM recognized that we needed to evaluate how we could best support our students. We took a deliberate, thoughtful approach, considering a variety of options before selecting Sallie Mae as our preferred partner.
This collaboration is about expanding choices—not replacing them.
Supporting Students Through Their Journey
Eligible students who choose to work with Sallie Mae through AACOM will have access to financing options designed specifically for medical education, along with preferred borrower benefits, financial wellness resources and support throughout medical school and into residency. The collaboration also recognizes that the financial challenges students face do not end at graduation, offering resources that can help ease the transition into residency as they begin the next chapter of their professional journey.
Just as important, we want students to make informed decisions. Financing medical education is one of the most significant financial commitments many people will ever make. Our role is not to tell students which path to choose but to ensure they have access to reliable information and responsible resources so they can choose the path that best fits their circumstances.
At AACOM, we often talk about preparing physicians to care for the whole person. Supporting students means taking a similarly holistic view of their educational experience. Academic success matters. Clinical training matters. Mentorship matters. Financial well-being matters, too.
When students are supported throughout their journey, they are better positioned to focus on what brought them to medical school in the first place: serving patients and improving lives. That mission hasn't changed.
As the financial landscape continues to evolve, our commitment to helping future osteopathic physicians succeed remains steadfast. We'll continue looking for thoughtful partnerships, practical solutions and innovative ways to ensure that talented students have every opportunity to pursue a career in medicine.
Because investing in our students today is ultimately an investment in the health of our communities tomorrow.
