On April 21, 2026, the AACOM/UNC Sheps Center GME Development Fellowship Preconference Workshop brought together nearly 50 graduate medical education (GME) leaders, educators, and fellowship participants for a full day of interactive learning at AACOM's Educating Leaders 2026 Conference in Las Vegas. The workshop provided participants with practical tools, expert guidance, and collaborative learning experiences to strengthen their knowledge and skills in developing and sustaining graduate medical education programs.  View the GME Fellows Preconference Agenda.

Throughout the day, nationally recognized GME leaders facilitated interactive sessions on key topics including scenario planning, GME finance, rural residency development, state workforce strategies, and common challenges encountered when launching and expanding residency programs. Rather than focusing solely on presentations, participants actively engaged in discussions and applied concepts to real-world GME development scenarios, fostering practical problem-solving and strategic thinking.

The afternoon featured presentations from GME Development Fellowship participants, who showcased the progress and impact of their capstone projects. Fellows highlighted innovative approaches to developing new training pathways, strengthening financial sustainability, informing workforce planning through data, and supporting rural and community-based GME programs. The workshop concluded with an interactive panel discussion, where experienced GME leaders addressed participants' questions and shared practical strategies for overcoming barriers commonly encountered in GME development.

By combining expert instruction, collaborative learning, and peer engagement, the preconference workshop reflected the AACOM/UNC Sheps Center GME Development Fellowship's commitment to preparing current and future GME leaders. The experience reinforced that successful GME development is built not only on technical knowledge, but also on strong partnerships, shared learning, and a community dedicated to advancing physician training and improving healthcare access nationwide.
